Client Engineering & Advisory Consultant – Rail Strategy and Feasibility Team

Our UK Rail team’s Client Engineering and Advisory Services group provides systemic and integrated rail solutions, which are:

  • User-focused
  • Operationally driven
  • Grounded in engineering
  • Commercially sound

Teams within the group include: Rolling Stock, Rail Planning & Operations, Rail Strategy & Feasibility, Digital Rail, and Client Engineering.

The Strategy and Feasibility team is where it all begins! We are a team of engineers, strategic planners, and project managers, with experience across the rail industry. We think:

  • Technically
  • Commercially
  • Operationally

We collaborate with our colleagues, other parts of WSP, and external organisations to develop early-stage railway requirements into fundable projects.

We work on a broad range of early-stage development projects with public and private sector clients, including:

  • Developing proposals for new stations and freight facilities
  • Evaluating and quantifying the introduction of new passenger and freight rail services
  • Supporting clients with technical rail advice as they develop their own plans and strategies

About the Role

We are seeking consultants to join the Rail Strategy and Feasibility team at WSP. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic rail advice to external and internal clients, gaining a central role in multi-disciplinary projects
  • Developing WSP’s rail-focused service offerings within specialised areas, such as:
    • Rail
    • Light rail
    • Freight
    • Local authority transport strategies
  • Planning, managing, and delivering tasks that contribute to large projects
  • Bidding for and delivering new rail projects
  • Collaborating externally with clients and internal colleagues to solve problems and drive growth

Key Requirements

To be successful in this role, we will look for experience and demonstrations of the following:

  • Experience working in rail, transport, light rail, freight, or local authority transport services, including:
    • An understanding of rail scheme development, legislative processes, and funding frameworks
  • Understanding across strategic planning, operational planning, business case development, and engineering feasibility, with an ability to see both the big picture and attention to detail
  • Proven capability to think strategically and work independently with professional, proactive, and collaborative leadership
  • Awareness and adaptability to the consultancy environment
  • Strong organisational, project management, and stakeholder communication skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft tools
  • We particularly welcome professionals working towards or holding accredited professional qualifications in planning, engineering, or rail-related fields
