Senior / Principal EIA Consultant
Principal Environmental Consultant – Environmental Planning Team
About the Role
Arcadis is the world’s leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. As part of a growing and agile business, our Environmental Planning team is looking for a Principal Environmental Consultant with:
- A broad range of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) experience
- Proven expertise in environmental management, technical specialisms, or sustainability
- The ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams, collaborate with stakeholders, and develop business growth areas
- Strong mentorship skills to guide and support team members
How You’ll Make an Impact
You’ll help improve quality of life while addressing critical challenges like:
- Protecting natural environments and water resources
- Mitigating climate change, urbanisation, and biodiversity loss
- Managing floods, wildfires, and other unforeseen natural events
- Shaping resilient infrastructure, urban regeneration, and sustainability initiatives for future generations
Key Responsibilities
Team & Project Leadership
- Lead and coordinate environmental impacts assessments (EIAs), Environmental Statements (ES), and related deliverables
- Oversee multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring optimal environmental outcomes
- Develop and implement new areas of business growth

Collaboration & Delivery
- Work closely with clients, project managers, and internal colleagues to deliver high-standard environmental solutions
- Manage collaborative projects with rail, highways, energy, and residential/mixed-use regeneration sectors
- Engage with planning authorities, regulators, and stakeholders
Governance & Quality Assurance
- Review, edit, and summarise technical reports for non-technical audiences
- Manage project quality, commercial performance, and H&S standards
- Lead tender bids and contribute to project-winning proposals
Technical & Development Focus
- Provide expert environmental advice tailored to project needs (e.g., protected species, waste, carbon, noise, air quality, surface water)
- Support SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment) and/or Integrated Impact Assessments (IIAs) where applicable
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements
✔ Proven EIA experience with a strong technical understanding of environmental and sustainability principles ✔ Experience leading environmental screening, scoping, and statements (including major infrastructure projects like rail/railways, highways, residential, mixed-use, regeneration) ✔ Commercial expertise, including project forecasting, resource management, and QA ✔ Practical knowledge of the UK planning system and consenting processes ✔ Leadership ability in multi-disciplinary projects, with project management and mentorship skills ✔ Exemplary report writing and presentation skills (ability to simplify technical findings for non-experts) ✔ Chartered status (e.g., CEnv, MIHT, MIEMA) or working towards it ✔ Valid UK driving licence
