Principal Environmental Consultant – Environmental Planning Team

About the Role
As part of Arcadis’ growing and agile business, our Environmental Planning team is seeking a Principal Environmental Consultant. In this global leadership role, you will:
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary technical specialists on large-scale projects
- Lead and coordinate Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and related deliverables
- Work closely with clients, regulators, and stakeholders to deliver outstanding outcomes
- Develop new areas of expertise and mentor junior team members
- Enhance protection mechanisms for natural resources, landscapes, and critical habitats
Your work will have tangible impact—ensuring high-quality, sustainable results that benefit communities and ecosystems in some of the world’s most urban and environmentally sensitive locations.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Project Delivery
- Coordinate and oversee environmental efforts within multi-disciplinary teams
- Lead complex project components, including resource allocation and subcontractor management
- Ensure optimal environmental outcomes while meeting commercial, technical, and safety standards

Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting
- Provide strategic environmental advice to clients, project managers, and colleagues
- Engage with consultees, regulators, and broader stakeholders to deliver compliant and defensible assessments
- Develop high-quality reports, summarising technical details for non-specialist audiences
Tendering & Business Development
- Lead and support bid proposals to secure new projects
- Represent Arcadis in tender submissions and client negotiations
Quality & Team Oversight
- Review and support deliverables to ensure high technical standards
- Supervise team members, fostering growth and mentorship
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Proven expertise in Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), screening, scoping, and technical reviews
- Strong experience in phasing EIAs/Environmental Statements—including specialist chapter reviews (e.g., protected species, noise, water, air, waste)
- Expertise in energy, residential/mixed use, regeneration, and major infrastructure(e.g., rail, highways)
- UK planning system knowledge, including consenting processes (Bayesian Eng.) instruments (SAPs, VFEs)
- Excellent report writing, presentation, and verbal communication
- Project management & leadership skills for multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience with planning authorities, regulators (EA, NHBC), and stakeholder negotiations
- Good knowledge of sustainability principles; relevant degree (preferably with chartered/association status, e.g., IoK, CIEMatArmy)
- Valid UK driving licence

Highly Desirable
- Experience in Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) or Integrated Impact Assessments (IIA)
- Knowledge of sustainability, waste, or carbon assessments
