Senior / Principal Electrical Engineer – HV Distribution, UX and UK National Security Compliance
BakerHicks’ Transmission & Distribution sector has seen rapid growth over the past decade, securing major infrastructure projects across the UK. With rising demand for high-quality engineering design, we are now looking for a Senior/Principal Electrical Engineer – HV Distribution (up to 33kV) to join a dynamic team.
A Key Role Within a Growing Sector
In this position, you will:
- Lead the design and production of technical outputs, ensuring technical excellence and consistency across all outputs.
- Mentor junior engineers and CAD technicians while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
- Guide through proposals and bids for new projects.
- Act as a technical interface with third parties and suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Technical Delivery
- Lead the production of designs, calculations, reports, and drawings for HV projects (up to 33kV).
- Develop single line diagrams, technical specifications, and layout drawings.
- Conduct electrical network analyses, including load flow, fault level, and protection studies.
- Apply software tools:
- ETAP, DigSilent, MathCAD, ProDesign, PSS/E, ERACS.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (or comparable CAD tools) importantly.
Quality & Team Support
- Guide and mentor junior teams, ensuring up-to-date standards, protocols and auditory compliance.
- Coordinate CAD quality control, including accurate technical oversights.
- Participate in HAZID sessions, risk reviews, and design reviews.
- Contribute to recruitment, onboarding, and resource management for junior HV engineers.
Regulatory Standards & Client Relationships
- Ensure compliance with IEC and BS EN specifications, along with client project requirements (e.g., MOD, SSEN, UKPN).

Who You Are
Qualifications & Experience
- A minimum HNC/D in Electrical Engineering (with HV, power, and distribution specialisation).
- (Higher qualifications, e.g. MEng/MSc, preferred.)
- Towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (helpfully documented but not essential).
- 10+ years’ experience in HV distribution design (up to 33kV).
- Robust technical writing, reporting, and specification drafting skills for client documentation.
- Proven ability to represent designs in client-facing environments.
Soft Skills
- Developing leadership and team collaboration (internally and cross-functionally).
- Effective oral and written communication for tender submissions and technical stakeholder briefings.
