Senior / Principal Nuclear System Engineer

Job Overview

Do you enjoy working in safety-critical industries and contributing to solutions for complex engineering challenges? Join us as a Senior / Principal Nuclear System Engineer and play a meaningful role in supporting our nuclear clients to assess and manage risk, ensuring the safe, reliable operation of systems that safeguard nuclear safety and generation.

In this role, you will help enable innovative decision-making across the lifecycle of nuclear facilities, bringing best practice into plant operation, maintenance, and design integrity while ensuring alignment with original purpose and reliability. Your contributions will drive UK’s ambition for low-carbon energy, shaping a more sustainable future.

The Role

  • Lead and develop safety assessments for nuclear systems, including hazards analysis and safety substantiation, across design, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
  • Partner with clients to understand strategic needs and guide technical and commercial strategies for system health, engineering substantiation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Engage with stakeholders—from clients to regulators—to champion system reliability, share insights, and present technical solutions while fostering trusted, collaborative relationships.
  • Work across diverse sectors, including defence, nuclear generation, new build, fusion, and SMR/AMR technologies, solving complex challenges in systems, plant, and safety engineering.
  • Balance technical rigor with strategic thinking to support project delivery, blending attention to detail with a systems-level understanding.
  • Collaborate globally across multidisciplinary teams at AtkinsRéalis, leveraging global expertise and contributing to a connected technical community.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, cultivating capability and refining your own leadership skills.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
