Job Description: Senior / Principal Transport Planner and Modeller
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior / Principal Transport Planner and Modeller to lead the delivery of complex transport modelling and development planning projects, with a particular focus on microsimulation modelling and transport appraisal.
The successful candidate will:
- Provide technical leadership across diverse transport projects (development, infrastructure, aviation, public sector)
- Develop robust modelling evidence supporting planning applications, business cases, and transport strategies
- Combine technical excellence, project leadership, client management, and business development
Key Responsibilities
Transport Planning
- Direct the preparation and review of:
- Transport Studies
- Transport Assessments
- Transport Statements
- Travel Plans
- Associated technical reports
- Preference for experience in:
- Masterplanning
- Site promotions
- Transport strategy development
- Transport business cases
Transport Modelling & Microsimulation
- Lead VISSIM microsimulation models, including:
- Development, calibration, validation and application
- Conduct junction modelling using:
- Junctions 10
- Linsig
- Other relevant tools
- Develop:
- Modelling methodologies
- Analysis frameworks for planning projects
- Sensitivity analysis and mitigation strategies
- Technical review/approval of modelling studies
- Integrate microsimulation results with strategic and multimodal modelling
- Advise stakeholders on assumptions, methodology, and results interpretation

Project Leadership & Delivery
- Oversee end-to-end project execution from inception to completion
- Ensure delivery to programme, budget, and quality standards
- Provide strategic transport advice across diverse project sectors
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead discussions with local authorities and statutory consultees
- Present modelling results at:
- Client meetings
- Stakeholder workshops
- Planning committees
- Public inquiries
Team Leadership & Development
- Mentor peers and cultural development within the team
- Lead technical training and knowledge-sharing sessions on:
- Microsimulation modelling
- Transport planning
- Support resource planning and skills development
- Promote innovation and best practice in digital delivery
Business Development
- Contribute to bids, tenders, and frameworks
- Identify growth opportunities for:
- Modelling services
- Transport planning
- New markets
- Develop key client accounts
- Participate in thought leadership and industry engagement
Requirements

Degree qualification in:
- Transport Planning
- Civil Engineering
- Geography
- Mathematics (or related field)

Minimum of 10+ years’ experience in transport planning and modelling consultancy

Specialist competencies:
- Extensive experience with VISSIM microsimulation
- Strong expertise in junction modelling (Junctions 10, LinSig)
- Proven record delivering complex transport evidence for:
- Major infrastructure projects
- Planning applications
- Deep understanding of:
- DfT Transport Analysis Guidance (TAG)
- National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF)
- Industry guidance
