Senior Probation Officer – National Probation Service (NPS)
Location: NMS Liverpool Film Studios, L5 9YJ (flexible working options available)
About the Role
A management position within the National Probation Service (NPS). The Senior Probation Officer supports the Head of Operational Function, providing leadership in a Local Delivery Unit (LDU) or other operational unit.
Key Responsibilities
Senior Probation Officers deliver the following core responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Accountability
- Provide effectively management and leadership to the team
- Ensure quality delivery of good practice in line with national standards and organisational policies
- Maximise performance improvement, adhering to policy frameworks and contractual obligations (HMPPS, Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRC)).
Strategic & Financial Governance
- Deploy resources cost-effectively, optimising budget and service delivery to strategic aims
- Leverage performance data to drive operational efficiency and evaluate practice
- Manage financial resources within set limits, authorising expenditures and enforcing HMPPS financial policies.
Supervision & Workforce Development
- Proactively manage staff development, addressing issues of:
- Underperformance
- Attendance
- Health & Safety
- Employee relations & diversity
- Ensure risk compliance by officer managers, aligning with public protection standards and targets.
Collaboration & Public Policy
- Contribute to public protection via multi-agency partnerships and individual casework reviews
- Strengthen pro-social modelling through reinforcement and challenging anti-social behaviours
- Promote Innovation and continuous improvement in service delivery

Regulatory & Ethical Compliance
- Conduct safeguarding duties under statutory NPS frameworks
- Maintain strict confidentiality alignment with NPS handling of sensitive information.
- Ensure adherence to NPS and HMPPS rules, including aims and values
- Deliver additional responsibilities as delegated by the Head of Operational Function.
Key Conditions
- Possibility of out-of-hours work for specific operational needs
- Senior Probation Officers may be asked to lead across multiple tasks outlined in this role.
Qualifications & Behaviours
Essential Qualifications
Accepted probation frameworks including:
- Musculoskeletal Health & Wellbeing Across the Lifespan Levels 1–2
- Probation Qualification Framework approved qualifications such as:
- Graduate Diploma / Honours Degree in Community Justice with integrated Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice
- Previously recognised pre-2007 qualifications (including Diploma in Probation Studies or CQSW).
