Senior Product Engineer
Senior Product Engineer – Document AI Team
Main Purpose Trafigura is transforming digitally, developing innovative AI technologies to revolutionise commodities trading. The Document AI team plays a central role in extracting value from proprietary documents to drive process optimisation and data science initiatives. We are seeking a Senior Product Engineer to collaborate with our AI team, constructing reliable AI/LLM applications that directly enhance traded operations—this is a hands-on, individual contributor role.
About the Role
Build robust AI and LLM-driven applications and backend infrastructure to power large-scale trading processes. Deeply involve in full-stack engineering, from algorithm design to production deployment, ensuring high reliability in an agile environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Python-based backend services and APIs
- Build document processing pipelines, combining LLMs with traditional ML techniques
- Design and implement functional frontend interfaces (React, TypeScript) with seamless backend integration
- Perform debugging, performance tuning, and reliability optimisations for distributed systems
- Author comprehensive tests and establish monitoring/instrumentation for backend systems
- Rapidly prototype, evaluate, and deploy features in production
- Contribute to code reviews, solid architecture discussions, and technical decisions
- Translate business requirements from non-technical stakeholders into production-grade solutions

Potential Early Projects (First 6 Months): ✔ Design and build AI agent-user interfaces for 5,000+ global employees ✔ Extend Trafigura’s internal intelligent document management system with new AI-powered UX ✔ Integrate the AI assistant with internal systems/MCPs, enabling seamless data access
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- 5–8+ years of production backend engineering, focusing on APIs and scalability
- Frontend fluency: Comfortable with React, TypeScript, and user interface development
- Expert-level Python: Deep knowledge of modern frameworks (e.g., FastAPI, asyncio), typing (Pydantic), and ecosystem libraries
- Strong REST API and microservices expertise with database design (SQL/NoSQL)
- Practical experience with modern AI frameworks (e.g., Pydantic AI) and LLM integration
- Hands-on experience with monitoring, observability, and system reliability
- Proficiency in software testing, exception handling, and TDD frameworks
- In-depth knowledge of modern architectures:
- Microservices/Event-Driven Design
- OO/DDD Principles
- CI/CD, Infra-as-Code, Containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes)
- Cloud engineering (preference for AWS)

- Prior work experience in commodities trading, derivatives, asset or equity markets

Key Relationships
- Collaborate with the Digital Transformation Team to clarify business needs and deliver systems that solve them.
- Work with Data Science and Engineering teams, bridging the gap between data solutions and operational use cases.
Department Overview
The Digital Transformation Team unites Trading Technology and Data Science, championing AI-driven advancements across Trafigura’s 5,000+ employees. As the Centre of Excellence for Agentic AI, you’ll drive scalable applications that inform global trading operations.
Reporting Structure
Report directly to the Document AI Lead.
