Job Description: Senior Product Engineer (Backend)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Product Engineer (Backend) based in the United Kingdom.

This role offers the opportunity to build the backend foundations powering next-generation embedded insurance and retirement solutions.

You will design scalable APIs and developer-focused products that help platforms deliver seamless employee benefits experiences.

Working at the intersection of engineering, product thinking, and customer impact, you will solve complex technical challenges while shaping reliable systems.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to transform ideas into secure, high-performing solutions.

The role requires strong ownership, architectural expertise, and a passion for creating exceptional developer experiences.

You will contribute to a fast-growing technology environment where your decisions directly influence product evolution and global impact.

Accountabilities:

As a Senior Product Engineer (Backend), you will take ownership of designing, developing, and improving backend systems that support embedded products and customer-facing experiences. You will combine technical excellence with product awareness to deliver reliable solutions, improve developer experiences, and contribute to continuous innovation.

  • Design, build, and enhance scalable backend services, APIs, and SDKs that support embedded insurance and retirement products.
  • Own technical architecture decisions, system design, implementation, and long-term improvements across backend platforms.
  • Develop reliable and secure solutions using modern backend technologies, ensuring performance and scalability.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, engineers, integration teams, and domain specialists to deliver customer-focused solutions.
  • Transform internal processes and workflows into efficient self-service capabilities that improve customer experiences.
  • Participate in incident management, troubleshooting, and resolution of technical issues while promoting a blameless learning culture.
  • Research and implement improvements that strengthen product quality, operational efficiency, and platform reliability.
  • Contribute to API design, documentation, and developer experience initiatives that enable customers and partners to integrate successfully.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced backend engineer who combines strong technical skills with product-oriented thinking. You should be comfortable owning complex systems, collaborating across teams, and delivering solutions that create measurable value for users.

  • 8+ years of experience building backend systems and production-grade applications.
  • Strong expertise with.NET (including modern versions), SQL databases, ORM frameworks, and automated testing practices.
  • Experience designing and developing API-driven products and scalable backend architectures.
  • Cloud experience with platforms such as Azure or AWS.
  • Familiarity with fintech, payroll, insurance, benefits, or other regulated technology environments is a plus.
  • Proven ability to collaborate directly with product teams, designers, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex technical challenges.
  • A product mindset with a focus on understanding customer needs and delivering impactful solutions.
  • Experience taking ownership of projects from technical design through delivery and continuous improvement.
  • Availability to work with at least 5 hours of overlap with GMT working hours.
