Job Description
Main Purpose of Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Controls Engineer with a strong background in Planning and Cost Management to support the successful delivery of major capital projects within the energy sector.
This role is ideal for a Project Controls professional who combines advanced scheduling expertise with robust cost control capabilities. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining integrated project schedules, managing project budgets and forecasts, analysing project performance, and providing accurate, timely reporting to support informed decision-making.
Working closely with project teams, contractors and key stakeholders, you will play a critical role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with approved cost, schedule and performance objectives. You will be responsible for integrating planning and cost information, identifying risks and opportunities, managing change, and driving best-practice project controls across the project lifecycle.
Key Accountabilities
Planning & Scheduling
- Develop, maintain and manage detailed project schedules using Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
- Establish project baselines and monitor progress against approved schedules.
- Analyse critical path activities, float consumption, schedule performance and project constraints.
- Conduct schedule risk assessments and identify potential impacts to project delivery.
- Monitor contractor schedules and integrate them into the overall Integrated Master Schedule (IMS).
- Evaluate project progress and identify schedule variances, delays and recovery opportunities.
- Support project teams in developing mitigation and recovery plans where required.
Cost Management & Forecasting
- Prepare, develop and maintain project budgets, cost plans and forecasts.
- Monitor and control project commitments, accruals, expenditure and approved changes.
- Support monthly cost reporting, forecasting and budget reconciliation activities.
- Analyse cost performance and identify variances against approved budgets and forecasts.
- Ensure robust cost management processes are implemented and maintained throughout project delivery.
- Support financial planning and provide accurate cost data to enable effective management decision-making.

Integrated Project Controls
- Support the integration of schedule, cost, risk and change information to provide a comprehensive view of project performance.
- Establish and maintain Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS) and associated coding systems.
- Prepare weekly and monthly project controls dashboards and performance reports.
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of project controls standards, systems and procedures.
- Maintain project risk registers and support risk identification, assessment and mitigation activities.
- Support project change management processes, ensuring all approved changes are accurately reflected in schedules, costs and reporting.
- Conduct project performance reviews and provide recommendations to improve delivery outcomes.
Stakeholder Management
- Work collaboratively with project managers, engineering teams, contractors and client stakeholders.
- Present planning and cost performance information to project leadership teams.
- Provide project controls expertise and guidance to support effective project execution.
- Build strong relationships across multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment and consistency of project controls information.
Qualifications
- Significant Project Controls experience with a strong focus on both Planning & Scheduling and Cost Management.
- Proven experience supporting major capital projects within Energy, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure, Utilities, Nuclear or similar industries.
- Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
- Experience developing and maintaining integrated project schedules and cost reports.
- Strong understanding of project controls principles, including planning, cost control, forecasting, risk management and change control.
- Experience preparing project budgets, cost forecasts, performance reporting and variance analysis.
- Knowledge of Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS) and project control methodologies.
- Experience integrating contractor schedules into master project plans.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex project data.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable
- Degree qualification in Engineering, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as APM, PMI or similar.
- Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM) methodologies.
- Experience working in large-scale energy or field development projects.
- Knowledge of project controls reporting tools and data visualisation platforms such as Power BI.
