Senior Project Controls Engineer – Defence Project Support

We work across over 110 offices globally, delivering ambitious and highly technical projects for major clients. The Defence Infrastructure Cost Centre offers expertise spanning Programme and Project Management, Project Planning, Cost Engineering, Risk Management, and Commercial Disciplines to support projects of varying complexity and scale—ranging from £100,000 to over £200M in value. We support the entire project lifecycle—both pre-contract and post-contract.

Due to growing client demands, we are looking to expand our team by bringing on talented professionals who will:

  • Support our Defence client portfolio.
  • Develop their career while working on a range of complex, challenging commissions.

About the Role

Important Security Note: Before applying, this role is highly sensitive and requires:

  • Sole UK National eligibility to achieve and maintain UK MoD Security Clearance (SC).
  • Already holding an SC is highly desirable—apply even if you believe you’d be a great fit.

We’re actively seeking Project Controls professionals with an emphasis on planning. As a Senior Project Controls Engineer, your role will include:

  • Creating, maintaining, and managing project schedules aligned with client requirements.
  • Developing schedules in collaboration with the Project Manager and team.
  • Reducing uncertainty, setting clear objectives, and improving efficiency.
  • Supporting Project Managers to schedule work and plan assignments.
  • Evaluating schedule progress and performance, identifying emerging risks.
  • Assisting with Change Management to ensure timely and effective processes.
  • Supporting status reporting to inform management on progress.
  • Conducting schedule analysis to determine courses of action or recovery for delays.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver project controls services as required by clients.
  • Develop and maintain schedules in alignment with project goals.
  • Monitor and analyze project performance, reporting deviations and risks.
  • Strengthen project efficiency through data-driven insights.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (engineering, finance, stakeholders).
  • Advise on best practices in project planning and control.

Requirements

Essential

  • A degree in a relevant technical or management field, or equivalent qualifications/experience.
  • Membership of a professional body (e.g., Association for Project Management, Project Management Institute).
  • Leadership skills: Ability to mobilise, inspire, and lead by example.
  • Stakeholder management experience (balancing priorities across teams and clients).
  • Proficiency with Primavera P6 (and other related software).
  • Direct experience in Planning & Scheduling across the full project lifecycle.

Additional

  • Multi-disciplinary knowledge (cost, risk, programme management).
  • Existing Security Clearance (SC)—required for reliance eligibility.

Turner & Townsend hybrid working model enables flexibility for work-life balance. However, the demands of client projects require:

  • Typically 60% site/office attendance, though flexibility may adjust based on project/business needs.
  • Collaboration in office settings to drive team strength in learning, collaboration, and creativity.

Security Clearance

Due to the sensitive MoD projects Turner & Townsend undertakes:

  • Applicants must hold sole UK National status.
  • Security vetting assessments apply (review eligibility via UK Security Vetting).
