Senior Project Engineer – Electrical

About The Role

As a Senior Project Engineer – Electrical, you will play a key role within Ethos’ Data Centre Retrofit area, supporting the delivery of complex upgrades across mission-critical data centre environments.

You will lead the design, specification, and delivery of electrical systems, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest technical standards. Working within live environments, you will help maintain continuity of operations while delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

This role also involves:

  • Managing project delivery
  • Mentoring junior engineers
  • Acting as a key technical point of contact for clients and contractors across major European data centre markets

Day-to-Day Activities

  • Lead the design and delivery of electrical building services upgrades in live data centre environments, including:

    • M&E upgrades
    • Capacity increases
    • Technology refreshes
    • Phased refurbishments
    • Lifecycle replacements
  • Develop and manage retrofit-specific design approaches, including:

    • Tie-ins to live systems
    • Redundancy planning
    • Outage and staging strategies
    • Resilience design
  • Conduct or oversee technical due diligence, such as:

    • Capacity unlock assessments (power, cooling, white space)
  • Prepare and review:

    • Design drawings
    • Schematics
    • Schedules
    • Technical reports
    • Tender documentation
  • Manage project scope, budget, programme, and contracts by:

    • Identifying and mitigating scope creep
    • Assessing risks
    • Navigating live-environment constraints
  • Liaise directly with:

    • Clients (hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise operators)
    • Contractors
    • Vendors to ensure seamless project execution with no operational disruption
  • Drive quality assurance and governance, adhering to WAP/PTW protocols in environments that remain operational.

  • Mentor and support junior engineers and graduate staff within the retrofit workstream.

  • Support business development by contributing to:

    • Project proposals
    • Client presentations
    • Technical strategies for retrofit opportunities across EMEA

  • Champion innovation in live-environment engineering and:

    • Contribute to improving Ethos’ retrofit delivery processes
  • Lead electrical system tie-in strategies for:

    • Live power distribution upgrades (UPS changeovers, busbar modifications, generator integration)

About You

Technical Skills

  • Proven expertise in electrical building services design for live data centres, including:

    • LV/MV power distribution
    • UPS systems
    • Standby generation
    • Busbar upgrades
    • Life safety systems
  • Hands-on experience delivering electrical upgrades in operational mission-critical facilities, such as:

    • Live switchgear replacements
    • UPS changeovers
    • Phased distribution upgrades
  • Experience with software tools:

    • AutoCAD
    • Revit MEP
    • Bluebeam
    • Microsoft Office
    • Calculation tools: ETAP, Amtech, or DIALux
  • Strong understanding of IEC, CIBSE, BS, IS, and EN standards for retrofit and live projects.

  • Ability to produce:

    • Single-line diagrams
    • Schematics
    • Technical drawings for complex retrofit scopes
  • Knowledge of:

    • Commissioning processes
    • Power system coordination studies
    • Compliance documentation for live data centre upgrades

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field).
  • Minimum 8 years' experience in building services engineering, with at least 3 years focused on data centres or mission-critical projects.
  • Proven record of working in live, operational environments (e.g., brownfield upgrades, M&E replacements, phased refurbishments).
  • Chartered Engineer status (or actively pursuing it) with Engineers Ireland or equivalent.
  • Track record of managing multi-million-euro MEP projects from concept to completion.
  • Strong familiarity with:
    • Irish and EU building regulations
    • LEED/BREEAM or an advantageous understanding of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive
  • Familiarity with BMS/EPMS integration and smart building systems in mission-critical environments is advantageous.
