Senior Project Manager

Senior Project Manager (x2) – Capital Projects Delivery

Job ref: COO01407 Salary: £69,365–£79,257 per annum Closing date: Midnight, Sunday 12 July 2026

About the Role

Imperial College London is seeking two Senior Project Managers to drive the successful delivery of capital projects across our campuses, fostering spaces that catalyse breakthroughs in research, education and collaboration.

Based within the Property Division’s Capital Projects Delivery Team, you’ll helming projects of significant complexity—typically exceeding £1m or involving intricate technical, procurement, planning, and logistic considerations. Reporting to the Director of Project Delivery, your responsibilities include:

  • Leading projects directly and at executive level
  • Overseeing delivery by internal teams and external consultants
  • Ensuring consistency with Imperial’s project management standards
  • Championing bioavailability of university infrastructure for teaching, research, and innovation

Key Responsibilities

Project Management Cycle

  • Develop and deliver project briefs and capital project specifications from feasibility through to completion and handover
  • Manage risks, budgets, programmes, procurement and contracts, while adhering to:
    • Imperial standards, contractual obligations
    • Statutory requirements
    • Health and safety legislation
    • Environmental expectations
    • Capital budgets

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate intimately with:
    • Internal stakeholders (faculty, IT, academic departments)
    • Contractors, consultants, statutory bodies
  • Prioritise ministeralising disruption to operations throughout construction
  • Champion lessons learned consolidation and continuous improvement

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop project teams to uphold consistent excellence in delivery standards

Essential Requirements

  • A recognition quality project/programme management qualification
  • A degree or professional qualification aligned to capital projects or construction management
  • Advanced project experience in large-scale construction, refurbishment or infrastructure projects for high-value clients (e.g. universities, healthcare, corporates).
    • Demonstrated value-for-money delivery
  • Deep financial acumen—ability to:
    • Prepare budgets, control expenditures, and oversee valuations/cashflows
    • Provide monthly/quarterly financial reporting
  • Proven track record in:
    • Consultant/contractor/client strategy
    • Design-to-hand-over implementation, including change management
  • Strong familiarity with construction contracts, emphasizing:
    • JCT and NEC forms of contract
  • Holistic understanding of:
    • Construction law
    • Procurement procedures
    • Statutory planning, fire, and Building Safety Act compliance
    • Environmental/sustainability standards
  • Experiential skill set for:
    • Options appraisal, business case development, and user brief alignment
    • Stakeholder negotiation with care balancing political and operational needs

Soft Skills

  • Pragmatic mindset to manage competing priorities under tight deadlines
  • Exceptional communication (clear writing + 1:1 facilitation)
  • People leadership—case study evidence of successful:
    • Team mentoring
    • Conflict resolution and mediation
    • Maturation of vulnerably learning environments
