Senior Project Manager – Civil Engineering & Infrastructure Projects
Location: Bowburn
Business: Esh-Stantec (a joint venture between Esh Construction and Stantec) – working in partnership with Northumbrian Water Group under the Living Water Enterprise.
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead the safe, profitable, and successful delivery of major civil engineering and infrastructure projects, with values up to £60 million, across the entire project lifecycle (from concept through design, construction, commissioning, and handover).
In collaboration with Northumbrian Water Group and the joint venture’s design partner, you will provide strategic leadership to ensure delivery against:
- Programme
- Budget
- Quality
- Safety
- Client satisfaction
The role requires support in business development, including bid development, tender interviews, and pre-construction planning. You will be accountable for:
- Project performance
- Risk management
- Commercial success
- Stakeholder engagement
- Leadership of multidisciplinary teams
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Delivery
- Manage end-to-end delivery of Design & Construct projects (valued £25m–£100m), ensuring compliance with all regulatory and contractual obligations.
- Partner with Northumbrian Water Group and JV design teams to drive alignment between stakeholders.
- Oversee work winning activities, bid submissions, and tender interviews.
- Lead risk escalation, change control, and financial recovery strategies.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Champion excellence in HSEW (Health, Safety, Environment & Wellbeing) performance.
- Ensure compliance with:
- CDM Regulations
- Construction legislation
- Company and client HSEQ policies
- Lead incident investigations, continuous improvement initiatives, and project audits.
- Integrate sustainability objectives into project delivery.

Technical Leadership
- (Design Phase)
- Lead multidisciplinary design teams to ensure outputs meet programme, budget, and quality targets.
- Advise on buildability and value engineering during Concept & Definition (C&D) and X22 Stage 1.
- (Construction Phase)
- Champion innovation and modern methods of construction.
- Ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices.
Programme & Progress Control
- Develop and manage integrated project programmes (using MS Project, Primavera P6, or equivalent).
- Lead critical path analysis and project recovery when required.
- Conduct programme reviews and ensure subcontractors and supply chains comply with deadlines.
Commercial Performance
- Oversee project profitability, cash flow, and financial forecasting.
- Work with Commercial Managers & Quantity Surveyors to manage risk, change control, and compensation events.
- Ensure NEC4 contract compliance and effective contract administration.
Business Development
- Engage with clients, stakeholders, and framework partners to:
- Strengthen relationships.
- Identify repeat business opportunities.
- Support strategic bid development.
- Contribute to market trend analysis and competitor benchmarking.
Quality Assurance
- Promote right-first-time delivery and continuous improvement.
- Lead quality reviews, audits, and lessons-learned initiatives.
- Ensure full compliance and auditable records across all project activities.

Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Degree, HNC, or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
- CSCS Black Card.
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) qualification.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Proven track record in delivering:
- Projects valued £25m–£100m.
- Design & Construct contracts within collaborative/ alliance environments.
- Extensive experience in:
- Design phase leadership (harmonisation between schemes in the Esh-Stantec joint venture).
- Construction programme forecasting.
- Supplier & subcontractor management.
- Strong NEC contract expertise.
Desirable Attributes
- Membership or Chartership in:
- ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers)
- CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building)
- APM (Association for Project Management)
- APM UK PMQ, NEC accreditation, or comparable qualifications.
- Direct experience in the water sector (networking, treatment, infrastructure).
