Senior Project Manager - Defence

Project Manager – Defence Sector Midlands

Our turner & townsend Midlands team is expanding its capabilities within the Defence sector, one of our fastest-growing regions. We are seeking a highly skilled Project Manager with military or defence experience—or an ambition to explore this dynamic sector—to join and enhance a new team rivalled by our high-profile clients.

Job Description

If you have an established background in Project Management—or aspirations to deliver complex projects within the Defence sector—this is an ideal opportunity to shape and grow an evolving specialism with one of the world’s leading management consultancies.

Working within the Defence sector, your role will involve delivering impactful projects for clients who demand rigorous project delivery, strategic thinking, and collaboration across international teams, multinational clients, and multi-disciplinary stakeholders.

Role & Responsibilities

Your day-to-day will include:

Client-Driven Project Delivery

  • Influence and support project delivery through meticulous planning, monitoring, and controlling
  • Collaborate with project teams to define, interrogate, and consider the scope of work

Strategic Leadership & Risk Mitigation

  • Champion programme and project delivery strategies to secure successful business outcomes
  • Define programmes and projects ensuring alignment with client needs and strategic context

Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management

  • Foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain effective communication, ensuring key reports are clear and actionable

Technical & Financial Coordination

  • Develop and update schedules, cost information, and variance identification
  • Prepare and manage remedial plans to mitigate risks and ensure objectives are met
  • Coordinate between technical, engineering, project controls, commercial, and financial teams

Documentation & Approvals

  • Prepare Business Cases and secure internal and external approval
  • Execute Gateway reviews as required

Compliance & Governance

  • Maintain strict change management processes
  • Adhere to SOX controls (where applicable)

Performance Tracking & Reporting

  • Prepare and manage project plans through programme tools
  • Monitor and advise on project KPIs, ensuring transparent progress reporting

Qualifications & Experience

We are looking for candidates with:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline
  • A full UK driving licence (essential for travel and site visits)
  • Ideally, one or more of:
    • MAPM (Member of the Association for Project Management)
    • UK Security Clearance
    • MSP® (Managing Successful Programmes) – Practitioner
    • Certified Project Management Associate
    • PRINCE2® Practitioner

Strong technical project management experience in either Defence, infrastructure, construction, or cost management is essential.
