Senior Project Manager / Project Manager – Substation Renewals & Remedials

Location: South Yorkshire (Northern Powergrid Region)
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: Competitive + Car/Car Allowance + Flexible Benefits

Freedom has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Project Manager / Project Manager to lead the delivery of substation renewal and remedial works across the Northern Powergrid network. This is a key role responsible for the safe, efficient, and commercially successful delivery of projects from initial assessment through to completion and handover.

Working closely with Northern Powergrid and internal delivery teams, you will oversee a portfolio of projects that support the maintenance, upgrade, and future resilience of critical electricity infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of substation renewal and remedial projects, ensuring works are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Assess and develop allocated sites, coordinating surveys, condition assessments, and feasibility studies.
  • Develop and manage project delivery programmes, ensuring resources are effectively planned and allocated.
  • Prepare and oversee project estimates, cost forecasts, and financial reporting.
  • Manage commercial performance, identifying risks and opportunities to maximise value and contract performance.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including SAPs, engineers, designers, civil teams, jointers, and fitters.
  • Ensure compliance with all Freedom, client, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee project documentation, risk assessments, method statements, and permit systems.
  • Monitor project progress and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Northern Powergrid and key stakeholders.
  • Provide regular reporting on programme, performance, commercial position, and project risks.
  • Drive a positive safety culture and promote continuous improvement across all activities.

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Proven project management experience within utilities, power distribution, or infrastructure environments.
  • Strong knowledge of HV and LV electrical systems, particularly within substations.
  • Experience working under NRSWA/Street Works requirements.
  • Demonstrable experience managing multidisciplinary teams and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong commercial awareness, including estimating, forecasting, and cost management.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Strong organisational, planning, and coordination abilities.
  • Proven track record of delivering projects safely within construction or utility environments.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable:

  • Experience working on Northern Powergrid contracts or networks.
  • Project Management qualification (e.g., APM, PRINCE2).
  • IOSH, NEBOSH, or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
  • SAP authorisation or experience working closely with authorised personnel.
