Senior Project Manager

Senior Project Manager – Transportation (Highways) – Permanent (Manchester or Birmingham)

Position Overview & Vision

Joining Mott MacDonald’s Advisory & Programme Delivery (APD) unit, you’ll manage the entire project lifecycle—from inception to handover—ensuring contractual agreements are met via NEC Suite governance, rigorous cost/quality/time controls, and collaborative leadership across international highways networks.

Key Responsibilities

Responsible for end-to-end management of complex highways projects:

Core Delivery

  • Lead construction-to-delivery framework under NEC3/4/viring suites, representing the client/contractor’s interests on contracts worth £50M+, with strict contract compliance.
  • Develop, revise, and maintain project management plans aligned with cost, time, and quality objectives.
  • Scope and execute projects while balancing agreed objectives, deliverables, and key performance metrics, ensuring actionable fortifications for risks.

Stakeholder & Governance

  • Health, Safety, and Welfare (H&S&W) compliance driven championing: coordinate with CDM Representatives, ensuring contractors/advisory adherence to safety protocols and mitigating health-related risks.
  • Deploy effective stakeholder management, liaising across:
    • Clients & contract parties
    • Statutory/regulatory authorities
    • Proactive digital & consenting engagement pipelines

Commercial & Operational Positioning

  • Collaborate with procurement, commercial control, and finance functions, ensuring project execution aligns with financial parameters.
  • Assess supply chain and contractor capabilities, addressing performance envelopes through proactive interventions.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Criteria

✔ NEC3/4 Accreditation or equivalent experience in NEC Suite project delivery/evolve roles. ✔ Proven track record with multi-disciplinary infrastructure/built environment (highways) projects, including:

  • Client-facing Project Management
  • Comprehensive team leadership through approval and post-construction phases.
  • Built ambient influences on civil engineering, transportation executives, and private/public sector clients. ✔ APM, CIOB, RICS membership or tangible steps towards earning such credentials.

Familiarity & Skills

  • Foundational understanding of commercial procurement processes (pace setting, partnering, real assets experience).
  • Strong stakeholder empathy building critical cross-teams, commercial functions.
