Senior Property Surveyor – Cowdray Estate, West Sussex
Location: Cowdray Estate, Midhurst, West Sussex
Cowdray Estate is one of England’s leading rural estates, combining a rich heritage with a forward-thinking approach to estate management and its property portfolio. Covering approximately 16,000 acres within the South Downs National Park, the Estate manages a diverse portfolio that includes residential and commercial property, let farms, woodland, sporting interests. In addition it undertakes residential development on strategic sites, retaining new builds within the rental portfolio.
We are seeking an experienced and commercially minded Senior Property Surveyor to join our Property team based in the Estate Office in Easebourne, West Sussex. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a key role in the management and long-term stewardship of one of the country’s most respected rural estates.
The Role
Reporting to the Property Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the management of a varied portfolio of assets while supporting the Estate’s long-term vision of balancing commercial success with responsible property management.
The successful candidate will work closely with tenants, professional advisers, local authorities, and internal departments to deliver high-quality property management and professional surveying services across the Estate.
This is a broad role and would suit an individual looking to flex their commercial astuteness within a rural estate setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading the day-to-day management of a varied property portfolio
- Providing strategic advice on lease events, rent reviews, asset management and property performance
- Managing landlord and tenant relationships across the Estate’s holdings.
- Delivering proactive estate management advice to maximise the long-term performance of the Estate’s property assets.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the Estate property strategy
- Supporting strategic property acquisitions and disposals where appropriate.
- Working alongside other Estate operational departments to deliver integrated estate objectives.
- Assisting with development opportunities within the South Downs National Park to include initial appraisal, feasibility and provision of development advice.
- Preparing reports, budgets, management plans, and professional advice for the Estate’s senior management.
- Developing and maintaining excellent relationships with tenants, neighbours, statutory bodies, and professional consultants.
- Mentoring junior members of the property team where appropriate.

About You
You will be an experienced surveyor (rural or commercial) who enjoys working across a broad and varied rural estate portfolio and is passionate about delivering practical, commercially focused advice while respecting the Estate’s long-term heritage and environmental ambitions.
You Will Have
- MRICS qualification.
- Degree qualified in Surveying or Real Estate or a related discipline
- Significant post-qualification experience in either rural estate or commercial property portfolio management.
- Experience of managing either a small team or individuals
- Excellent knowledge of landlord and tenant legislation and commercial lease structures.
- Strong commercial awareness with an ability to understand financial information and make commercial recommendations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
- A collaborative approach and the confidence to build trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
- A full UK driving licence.
