Senior Protection & Control Engineer - Mitie Power & Grid

LOCATION: Olney (Hybrid)

At Mitie, our people are our greatest strength, and our promise is to create a place to work where you can thrive and be your best every day.

Mitie Power & Grid brings together three ICP business units—G2 Energy, ESM Power, and Rock Power Connections—alongside Custom Solar, the UK's leading behind-the-meter solar PV installer.

With over 400 specialist professionals across our ICP and solar teams—and access to thousands more engineering experts within Mitie—we are one of the UK's largest and most experienced providers of grid connection and renewable energy services. We offer a comprehensive suite of specialist services across grid application, design, equipment procurement, installation, testing, commissioning and ongoing operations and maintenance. Our focus is on supporting decarbonisation through projects including utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage (BESS), and EV infrastructure.

We're looking for a Senior Protection & Control Engineer who will lead the technical delivery and design of HV and EHV protection and control systems for renewable and utility-scale infrastructure projects.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership and management of a protection and control engineering team, ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of HV and EHV substations up to 400kV.
  • Lead the design, specification and configuration of complete protection and control systems, including setting project-specific protection philosophies and ensuring compliance with Grid Code, ENA G99, DNO and TSO standards.
  • Review tender and contract documentation, define protection scopes of work, and deliver high-quality technical documentation, drawings and calculations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Act as technical authority across projects, resolving engineering challenges, coordinating multi-disciplinary interfaces, and ensuring “right-first-time” delivery aligned with quality assurance processes.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, embed CDM 2015 principles, and promote safety and sustainability by design across all engineering activities.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
