Senior Python Developer
Senior Software Developer (Inside IR35) – Met Office
Contract Duration: Initial 3-month fixed-term with potential to extend Working Arrangement: Hybrid (office-based in Exeter with occasional travel)
About the Role
The Met Office is seeking an exceptional Senior Software Developer to contribute to our mission of delivering world-leading meteorological data via cutting-edge technologies. By designing scalable APIs and cloud-native services, you’ll ensure reliable, high-performance access to forecast and observation data — supporting emergency services, government agencies, businesses, and the public.
In our Data Services team, your focus will be on engineering Python-based solutions on AWS Cloud Computing, bridging advanced scientific modelling with user-facing platforms. You’ll work with terabytes of data daily, optimising system performance, scalability, and reliability while integrating outputs from our supercomputing infrastructure.

- Develop and maintain production-grade, large-scale Python systems for metrological data delivery
- Design and evolve AWS infrastructure using CDK/CloudFormation, with expertise in serverless architectures
- Prototype and implement solutions to improve data processing efficiency
- Lead projects, mentor team members, and champion best practices in software engineering
- Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and scalability across cloud services
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate scientific models with operational platforms
Requirements
Essential
- Active or eligibility for SC Security Clearance (note: preference may be given to candidates with existing active clearance due to speed of requirements)
- Proven cloud-native development experience on AWS, including:
- Design, ownership, and evolution of infrastructure using AWS CDK & CloudFormation
- Advanced Python software engineering, including:
- Development, testing, and maintenance of complex, production-grade systems
- Experience with large-scale systems and scalable architectures
- Serverless architecture expertise (e.g., Lambda, Event-Driven patterns)
- Demonstrated prototyping and proof-of-concept skills
- Experience leading projects and providing technical guidance to junior/developer team members

Desirable
- Public sector experience
- Familiarity with geospatial data tools (e.g., QGIS)
Key Considerations
- Role must be based in the UK only (no overseas work).
- This assignment falls under IR35 rules. Rates will be quoted as gross daily fees (subject to public sector tax/statutory deductions).
