About the Role
Shape the Future of National Infrastructure and Defence
At Babcock, we build a safer, more secure world – together. If you join us as a Senior Quantity Surveyor at Devonport Royal Dockyard, near Plymouth, Devon, you’ll play a key commercial leadership role on some of the UK’s most complex and strategically vital infrastructure programmes.
This isn’t a traditional quantity surveying position. You’ll guide major engineering and construction projects within our Naval Nuclear business, partnering with:
- Project teams
- Ministry of Defence stakeholders
- Supply chain partners
Responsibilities include commercial leadership, contract administration, and risk management – delivering projects that strengthen national defence while developing your career in a technically demanding, high-stakes environment.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Role Scope
- Commercial management of infrastructure, engineering, and construction projects
- Support for contract administration, cost control, change management, and compensation events
- Collaboration with project managers, suppliers, and stakeholders to maximise value-for-money and ensure contractual compliance
- Risk identification and mitigation to protect Babcock’s commercial position
- Strategic commercial support and project governance throughout the full lifecycle

Arrangements: Hybrid working – average 3 days on-site; remaining time may be worked from home.
Essential Requirements
Experience & Knowledge
- Proven commercial management within engineering/construction sectors
- Advanced NEC3 or JCT contract experience, applied effectively in project execution
- Experience in large, complex contracts – bids, tender strategies, and commercial strategies
- Skill in managing cost control, change management, and compensation events
- Ability to cultivate strong working relationships with project teams, suppliers, and senior stakeholders
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying or Building Services Quantity Surveying
Security Clearance
Critical: Eligibility requirements for a UK Security Check (SC) clearance – must include UK-born British nationality or residency without foreign citizenship.
