Shape the Future of National Infrastructure and Defence
At Babcock, we’re committed to creating a safe and secure world in collaboration. As a Senior Quantity Surveyor at Devonport Royal Dockyard near Plymouth, Devon, you’ll play a vital role in delivering critical UK naval infrastructure programmes.
The Role
This is far more than a traditional Quantity Surveying position. You’ll provide commercial leadership across major engineering and construction projects, directly supporting national defence and security.
Collaborating with project teams, Ministry of Defence stakeholders, and supply chain partners, you’ll ensure successful project outcomes by implementing effective commercial management, contract administration, and risk mitigation. Key Responsibilities:
- Managing commercial activities across infrastructure, engineering, and construction projects
- Supporting contract administration, cost control, change management, and compensation events
- Collaborating with project managers, suppliers, and stakeholders to maximise value and ensure contractual compliance
- Identifying, assessing, and mitigating commercial risks while safeguarding Babcock’s financial position
- Delivering commercial reporting, governance activities, and strategic commercial support throughout the project lifecycle

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
