Senior Quantity Surveyor – TSA Riley, Birmingham Office
About the Role
TSA Riley are seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join their growing team in Birmingham. This position will involve taking full ownership of cost management across pre- and post-contract duties on a variety of built environment projects, with a focus on large-scale, high-value residential developments (including mid-to-high-rise, city-centre, and build-to-rent projects). The role will also include mentoring junior staff, ensuring effective delegation and continuous professional development within the office.
Responsibilities
- Cost leadership – Taking ownership of cost planning, estimating, procurement, and contract administration to ensure commercial excellence.
- Financial oversight – Leading valuations, variations, payment advising, and monthly financial reporting to track project financial health.
- Commercial risk management – Monitoring performance, identifying risks/opportunities, and advising on corrective actions.
- Contractual compliance – Ensuring adherence to contractual obligations, tracking changes, and mitigating risks—escalating issues as required.
- Dispute resolution – Addressing contractual queries and commercial disputes proactively.
- Reporting & documentation – Maintaining cost data, contract records, and client reports using TSA Riley’s proprietary systems and templates.
- Client relations – Fostering clear, responsive communication with clients and delivery partners while managing expectations to ensure satisfaction and trust.
- Team leadership – Collaborating with project teams to cultivate a positive culture, share best practices, and mentor junior colleagues.
- Compliance & innovation – Enforcing commercial standards and contributing to TSA Riley’s risk management frameworks and future initiatives (e.g., benchmarking, continuous improvement proposals).

Requirements
- Experience:
- Proven track record as a Senior Quantity Surveyor in a consulting or client-facing environment, specialising in large-scale residential projects (preferably including mid-to-high-rise city-centre developments or build-to-rent schemes).
- Experience operating in the Employer’s Agent/Employer’s Representative role is a strong advantage.
- Full-spectrum pre- and post-contract expertise—cost planning, procurement, estimating, and contract administration.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior staff, delegate workloads, and foster professional growth.
- Ability to work across multiple sectors, clients, and project contexts with adaptability.
- Qualifications & Accreditation:
- Tertiary qualification in Quantity Surveying (preferably RICS-accredited).
- Preferred: Chartered membership (MRICS or equivalent); applications from candidates working towards accreditation will also be considered.
- Technical & Soft Skills:
- Proficiency with digital cost management tools for tracking, reporting, and documentation.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and dispute-resolution skills.
- Experience contributing to agile environments and cross-functional teams.
