Senior Research Fellow – Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program

About the Role
This fixed-term (3-year) full-time (35 hours/week) position is based in Sydney, NSW, with remuneration paid at Research Level C ($155K–$185K) or Research Level D ($185K+) including:
- 17% superannuation
- Annual leave loading

Position Summary
The Senior Research Fellow (Levels C/D) will lead high-impact research within the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, with a focus on:
- Design, implementation and analysis of epidemiological studies and clinical trials
- Improvement of detection, prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis and related health issues (e.g., drug user health)
- Grant acquisition, research dissemination (publications, policy submissions) and knowledge translation
- Collaborative research leadership, mentoring and capacity-building
Differences at Levels C and D
Level C – Independent Research Leadership
- Responsibilities:
- Make original and independent contributions to research in viral hepatitis/epidemiology.
- Lead nationally recognised projects with strong published outputs.
- Secure competitive research funding, develop multi-disciplinary collaborations.
- Supervise and mentor early-working research staff and postgraduate students.
- Eligibility:
- PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, infectious diseases, or related field.
- Expertise in epidemiological/study design, data analysis (R/Stata/SAS/Python), and clinical trials.
- Growing national reputation and peer-reviewed publications.

Level D – Strategic Program Leadership
- Bonus contributions alongside Level C:
- International research profile with influence in viral hepatitis/drug user health.
- Leadership of large-scale, multi-country grant applications and collaborations.
- Policy and practice impact, driving translation of research into clinical/social systems.
- Research mentorship for staff and students, and strategic program direction.
Key Skills & Requirements
Common to Both Levels
✔ A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, infectious diseases). ✔ Proven experience in:
- Design, conduct and analysis of epidemiological studies, clinical trials, or public health interventions.
- Statistical analysis using R, Stata, SAS, or Python.
- Managing large or linked data sets (e.g., health administrative data). ✔ Competitive research track record, including peer-reviewed publications. ✔ Ability to:
- Independently lead projects.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Engage with community, government, and policy stakeholders. ✔ Preference for experience with:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
- Correctional health settings.
- Community co-design research.
Level D-Specific
✔ Established international reputation in your field. ✔ Historic success in securing large-scale, competitive research funding as lead. ✔ Demonstrated multi-institutional strategic leadership. ✔ Evidence of priorities influencing policy, clinical practice, or public health.
