About the Kirby Institute
The Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney is a globally recognised leader in health research focused on eliminating infectious diseases. Our work prioritises at-risk communities by developing tests, treatments, cures, and prevention strategies—tackling viral hepatitis, drug user health, and other critical areas.
This role is based within the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program.
Position Overview
We’re seeking a Senior Research Fellow (Level C or D) to lead innovative research in viral hepatitis and drug user health. Reporting to the Deputy Program Head, you’ll design and execute epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and effectiveness research, ensuring translations into policy and practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and led high-impact epidemiological, clinical, and translational research aligned with the Program’s strategic goals.
- Secure competitive grant funding and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, national/international partners, and community stakeholders.
- Develop policy-relevant findings to advance detection, treatment, and prevention of viral hepatitis.
- Contribute to the growth of the Program’s national/international reputation.
Level C – Independent Research Leader:
- Publish high-quality peer-reviewed work and establish a nationally recognised profile.
- Supervise research staff and higher degree research students in initiatives you lead.
- Build methodological and project leadership skills across diverse datasets.

Level D – Strategic Research Director:
- Assume leadership of the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, including external collaborations and major funding applications.
- Demonstrate an internationally recognised profile and strategic impact on infectious disease research.
- Drive research translation into clinical practice and public health policy.
Key Skills & Qualifications
Required (Both Levels)
- PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, infectious diseases, drug user health, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Design, conduct, and analysis of epidemiological studies and clinical trials related to infectious diseases, viral hepatitis or drug use.
- Statistical analysis of complex datasets using R, Stata, SAS, or Python.
- A track record of completed research projects with publications in leading journals.
- Experience securing competiitve funding or contributing to grant success.
- Strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills and experience with:
- Health agencies, government bodies, and community organisations.
- Priority and marginalised populations (e.g., Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, drug users, and correctional health).
Level C Specifics
- Independent research project leadership.
- Emerging national recognition and the ability to build partnerships.
Level D Additional Requirements
- Internationally recognised research reputation.
- Experience leading multi-institutional collaborations and significant funding bids.
- Evidence of policy or practice influence through research translation.
