Job no: 540871 Location: Kensington, Sydney, NSW Categories: Senior Research Associate Employment Type: Full-time, 35 hours per week (3-year Fixed Term) Remuneration: $155K–$185K (Research Level C or D), plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading

Position Summary
This Senior Research Fellow (Level C or D) role, situated in the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, will play a critical role in advancing research to improve:
- Detection, prevention, and treatment of viral hepatitis and associated health disparities
- Epidemiological studies, clinical effectiveness research, and clinical trials
Reports to the Deputy Program Head, with key responsibilities:
Level C
- Drive original and independent research contributions
- Establish a nationally recognised research profile
- Lead research projects, secure grant funding, and collaborate across disciplines
- Provide methodological leadership in research activities
- Mentor research staff and supervise higher-degree students
Level D
- Provide strategic research leadership for the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program
- Secure high-impact, national/international funding as principal investigator
- Lead multidisciplinary research collaborations and translational research initiatives
- Influence policy, clinical practice, and public health implementation
Key Responsibilities
Core Functions
- Research Design & Leadership: Lead the design, analysis, and delivery of epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and real-world effectiveness research
- Data & Statistical Expertise: Manage and analyze complex clinical/epidemiological datasets (R, Stata, SAS, Python) and conduct biostatalistics, modelling, and monitoring
- Translational Impact: Ensure research findings are interpreted for policy, healthcare delivery, and community-based strategies
- Grant Development: Support competitive funding proposals and steering committees for priority research initiatives
- Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Work with NGOs, governments, correctional health services, and priority populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Qualification: PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, infectious diseases, drug use health, or a related discipline
- Experience: Minimum three years post-PhD research experience (proportional to opportunity)
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in statistical analysis and relevant software (R, Stata, SAS, or Python)
- Writing & Communication: Track record of peer-reviewed publications and national/international conference presentations
Level C:
- Independent Research Leadership: Proven ability to lead research projects and demonstrate accountability
- Funding Success: Contribution to competitive grant applications, either independently or collaboratively
- Methodological Rigour: Experience in clinical trials, observational studies, and dataset integration
- Collaborative Skills: Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams, with industry, government, or community partners
Level D (Additional to C):
- Global Research Profile: Established international reputation in viral hepatitis, infectious disease epidemiology, or drug use health
- Senior Grants Leadership: History of securing major national/international grants as principal investigator
- Research Mentorship: Experience co-supervising research staff and higher-degree students
- Translation & Policy: Demonstrable impact on health policies, clinical guidelines, or public health implementation
