Senior Research Fellow – Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program
Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia | Work Type: Full Time (35 hours/week) Job No: 540871 | Employment Duration: 3 Years Fixed Term Salary: $155K–$185K (Research Level C or D) + 17% super + annual leave loading

The Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney is a globally recognised health research organisation focused on eliminating infectious diseases. Our mission is to develop health solutions for marginalised communities through research that integrates community needs with innovative tests, treatments, cures, and prevention strategies.
Role Overview
The Senior Research Fellow (Level C or D) will lead groundbreaking research within the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program, contributing to:
- Advancing detection, prevention, and treatment of viral hepatitis and drug user health
- Designing and executing epidemiological studies, clinical effectiveness research, and clinical trials
- Translating evidence into policy and best practice
- Fostering collaborative partnerships and innovative funding applications
Key Responsibilities
At Level C:
- Make independent, high-impact research contributions
- Establish a nationally recognised research profile
- Lead award-winning research projects and publish in peer-reviewed journals
- Apply for and contribute to compETitive grant funding
- Provide methodological leadership and mentor research staff/HDR students
- Collaborate with health services, governments, and communities
At Level D (in addition to Level C):
- Provide strategic leadership across the Viral Hepatitis Program and broader Kirby Institute
- Secure major national/international funding as lead investigator
- Lead multi-institutional, multidisciplinary programs
- Drive policy, clinical, and public health implementation through research translation
- Advocate for systemic change in infectious disease equity

Key Qualifications & Skills
Core Eligibility (Both Levels)
- PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, infectious diseases, drug user health, or a related field
- Post-Doctoral research experience in viral hepatitis, drug user health, or equivalent
- Expertise in:
- Design, conduct, and analysis of epidemiological studies or clinical trials
- Statistical methods using R, Stata, SAS, or Python
- Working with clinical, administrative, or linked health datasets
- Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and grant success
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and engage with priority populations
Preferred (Both Levels)
- Experience with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health, correctional health, or community-led research
- Experience collaborating with governments, NGOs, or health agencies
Level D Additional Requirements:
- International research profile and credibility in your field
- Proven success in leading large-scale collaborations and translational research
- Evidence of policy influence or public health impact
- Strong mentor and leadership skills
