Senior Research Physician – Clinical Trials Role
About the Role
The Senior Research Physician will deliver exceptional clinical trials within EMS Healthcare’s Clinical Research Division, ensuring hamonious alignment with ICH-GCP and UK regulatory standards.
In this pivotal role, you will provide senior medical oversight, safeguarding:
- Participant safety
- Protocol adherence
- Data integrity
- Regulatory compliance
Collaborating closely with the Chief Medical Officer, Principal Investigators, sponsors, and operational teams, you will:
- Support trial strategy, feasibility assessments, and clinical governance.
- Strengthen EMS Healthcare’s research capability and reputation.
- Lead mentorship and service development across community-based and mobile research settings.
Main Duties
Leadership & Oversight
- Provide senior clinical leadership across assigned trials, ensuring:
- Participant safety
- Protocol compliance
- Data integrity
- Consistency throughout the entire study lifecycle
- Act as Principal Investigator (PI) or Sub-Investigator, ensuring accountability for:
- Medical decision-making
- Oversight of delegated studies
- Mentor and supervise Research Physicians and site teams, fostering:
- Capability development
- Competency assessment
- High standards of practice
Trial Feasibility & Strategy
- Lead feasibility assessments, protocol reviews, and study start-up planning, collaborating with:
- Sponsors
- Internal stakeholders
- Identify research opportunities and align with sponsored engagement to:
- Improve service development initiatives
- Strengthen bid responses
- Refine business cases
- Review study budgets, contracts, and resource requirements to ensure:
- Medical and operational viability
- Commercial feasibility
- Clinical robustness
Clinical Governance
- Maintain senior oversight to ensure compliance with:
- ICH-GCP
- Regulatory requirements
- Ethical standards
- Sponsor protocols
- Lead or assist in investigating:
- Protocol deviations
- Safety events
- Quality concerns
- Effective documentation, escalation, and corrective action
- Support EMS Healthcare in audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews while:
- Representing the organisation
- Driving continuous improvement

- Provide expert clinical guidance to:

- Multidisciplinary study teams
- Mentor junior medical colleagues through:

- Ongoing research capability development
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Build trusting, long-term relationships with:
- Sponsors & clients
- Ensure sponsor confidence in:
- Trial delivery
- Speed of response
- Clinical quality
- Engage effectively with:
- Regulatory authorities
- Ethics committees
- Investigators
- Internal senior leadership
- Work with the EMS Healthcare Medical Advisory Committee to:
- Shape clinical standards
- Improve service offerings
- Support organisational priorities
Operational Efficiency
- Provide overarching medical oversight across:
- Multiple studies & research sites
- Ensure optimal safety, quality, compliance, and participant experience in:
- Community-based & mobile research settings
- Develop, refine, and improve clinical & operational protocols including:
- SOPs
- Quality systems
- Adaptability to evolving service needs
- Represent the medical function to influences outcomes in:
- Sponsor & client meetings
- Cross-functional forums
Requirements
Essential:
✔ Medical degree with full GMC registration and a current licence to practise. ✔ Superior experience in clinical research or trials, demonstrated through:
- Senior medical oversight in accountable study management
- Experience leading study delivery and decision-making ✔ As a Principal Investigator or similar:
- Operating in a role with leadership accountability ✔ Capable of overseeing vibrating portfolios of studies/sites within:
- Highly regulated research settings ✔ Deep knowledge in:
- Clinical trial conduct
- Participant safety
- Regulatory compliance
- Protocol execution
- Risk management ✔ Mastery of:
- ICH-GCP
- Research governance
- Ethical standards
Preferred:
✔ Experience across therapeutic specialties like:
- Obesity
- Cardiometabolic disorders
- Neuropsychiatric conditions
- Infectious diseases ✔ Familiarity with:
- EMS Healthcare's mobile clinical services
- Decentralised research delivery
- Managed service execution models ✔ Postgraduate qualifications:
- Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine
- Other key investigator certifications
