Principal Researcher - AI / LLMs / Deep Learning /

Our client's research team applies AI to the design and optimisation of semiconductors, alongside fundamental research that supports both internal applications and the broader scientific community. Current areas of interest include large language models, optimisation methods for deep learning, reinforcement learning and generative models.

This is a permanent role, working 100% onsite in either London or Cambridge

What you will be doing

  • Shaping and communicating the strategic vision for research across the organisation
  • Overseeing multiple high-impact research projects and ensuring alignment with organisational goals
  • Driving breakthroughs in machine learning and AI through original research
  • Mentoring and providing leadership to senior researchers and research teams
  • Representing the team in external partnerships, collaborations and policy discussions
  • Influencing organisational research priorities and contributing to policy development
  • Building and maintaining relationships with academic, industry and funding partners
  • Publishing and presenting research at top-tier conferences, journals and industry forums
  • Staying at the forefront of AI advancements and identifying new opportunities for impact

What we are looking for

  • A PhD in Machine Learning, AI, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or a related field, or equivalent research experience
  • A distinguished publication record at top conferences and journals (e.g. NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL)
  • A demonstrated ability to shape research strategy and oversee multiple projects
  • A proven track record of driving breakthroughs and influencing research priorities
  • Advanced proficiency in Python, C++ or similar languages
  • Exceptional leadership, mentorship and communication skills
  • Experience representing research teams in external partnerships or policy forums

Nice to have

  • Deep expertise in optimisation, reinforcement learning and/or large language models
  • Experience in chip design and applied AI research
  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch or JAX
  • Experience influencing organisational policy and securing major research funding
