About the FCA and Team
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulates financial services firms in the UK to ensure fair, thriving, and effective markets. By joining, you’ll contribute to protecting consumers, driving economic growth, and shaping UK financial services.
Within the Supervision, Policy & Competition (SPC) division, the Payments & Digital Assets (PDA) directorate oversees regulatory oversight, policy development, and competition enforcement. The Cross-Cutting Delivery Department supports strategic initiatives for payments and digital finance, ensuring robust risk management, governance, operational efficiency, and stakeholder collaboration.
The Risk team functions as the first line of defence, focusing on risk management for payments firms (electronic money institutions/payments institutions) and digital assets (cryptocurrencies, tokenised assets, stablecoins). This role will help establish foundational processes for emerging functions in the growing department.
The Role
The Senior Risk Portfolio Associate will work collaboratively across teams to develop risk strategies for payments and digital assets. As this team is still forming, autonomy and adaptability are essential, with support for cross-directorate collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk Oversight & Reporting:
- Identify, monitor, and assess risks across payments and digital assets, ensuring robust documentation, controls, and reporting.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Build and maintain relationships with internal/external stakeholders, fostering trust through clear communication.
- Advocacy & Collaboration:
- Engage with senior leadership (including SLT and Executive levels) to present risk insights and recommended actions.
- Data Analysis & Insight:
- Analyse complex portfolios of risks; synthesise findings into concise, actionable recommendations.
- Governance & Technical Advice:
- Report to relevant committees and guide teams on effective risk engagement.
- Innovation & Adaptability:
- Adapt to rapid changes in regulatory and market environments; accelerate risk-level measurement tools.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
