Senior Engineer – Roads (Senior/Lead Level)

Location: Manchester or Liverpool, North West, UK

About This Role

At WSP, we empower our teams to thrive by combining global expertise with a passion for solving the world’s most challenging engineering problems. If you’re eager to contribute to major infrastructure projects while shaping a career aligned with your ambitions, this role is for you.

We’re seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Engineer to join our Roads team. In this position, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering frontier-breaking designs while mentoring junior engineers and fostering innovation. Whether it’s highway geometry, active travel schemes or complex junctions, your technical leadership will drive excellence in design, compliance, and cost efficiency.

Your work will have a real impact—from shaping sustainable transport networks to ensuring projects align with legal, technical, and client expectations. You’ll collaborate across multi-disciplinary projects, support project delivery, and provide expert guidance to junior colleagues.

Your Core Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Technical Leadership

  • Support and lead the development of highway designs across diverse sectors, clients, and project stages (concept through to construction).
  • Ensure projects meet budget, timeline, technical quality, and legal requirements—holding responsible accountability for critical deliverables.
  • Act as a technical expert, reviewing, approving, and authorising designs, reports, and drawings for release to clients.

Team Collaboration & Growth

  • Mentor junior engineers, upskill colleagues, and contribute to the team’s knowledge base.
  • Assist Project Managers with programming, pricing, proposal development, and cost estimation.
  • Direct and oversee technicians and engineers to deliver client-led work packages and complex project components.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Coordinate multispeciality project/client workstreams, balancing varied technical and deliverable demands.
  • Engage with clients, contractors, and internal teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • On occasion, provide site support, monitoring contractor compliance and ensuring works align with design intent.

Innovation & Problem-Solving

  • Apply ingenious solutions to technical challenges, prioritising creativity, efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Ensure designs align with best-practice codes (e.g., Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD).

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline) with demonstrable expertise in highway design.
  • 3+ years of post-qualification experience in a leadership role (traditional management/technical).
  • Working towards or having achieved either IEng or CEng with a recognised UK professional institution.
  • Proven expertise in:
    • Road geometry, roundabout design, at-grade/grade-separated junctions.
    • Inclusive active travel schemes and pedestrian/fire lane liaison.
    • Highway drainage and road restraint systems.
    • TSRGD, Client Design Guide, Highways England standards, Local Authority documentation.
    • Progressing departures from standard design (DoSD) in approval processes.
  • Proficiency in highway software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads, InfoDrainage, PDS) and the ability to oversee its use by junior team members.
  • CDM Coordinator experience under Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Strong change management skills—anticipating impacts on schedule, cost, and quality when delivering projects.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
