Senior Robotics Engineer

Senior Robotics Engineer (Mapping & Behaviour)

About Roboverse Reply:

Roboverse Reply is the Reply Group company specialising in robotics integration for complex outdoor environments. Our mission is to empower organisations in complex outdoor sectors to confidently adopt robotics through expert consulting, seamless integration, and rigorous testing — ensuring that technology always serves the business. We work across Agriculture, Construction, Defence, Energy, and Facilities & Infrastructure Management, delivering end-to-end robotics solutions that drive measurable ROI and sustainable business growth. We are not just deploying hardware — we sell organisational change enabled by advanced robotics, bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology and real-world operational impact.

We are in our Year 1 foundation phase, building the core team and technology stack that will underpin everything we do. This is a rare opportunity to join at the very beginning and shape a business from the ground up.

Role Overview:

As a Robotics Engineer, you will play a foundational role focused on mapping, planning, autonomous behaviours, and their integration with fleet coordination and management architectures for outdoor robotics. You will work across multiple levels of abstraction, from developing custom SLAM pipelines, navigation stacks, and behaviour architectures to integrating OEM autonomy systems with fleet coordination platforms such as Open RMF. You will apply strong fundamentals to build components such as mapping pipelines, behaviour trees, and fleet adapters, while also evaluating and integrating third-party and OEM solutions. As part of a small, multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to shaping the technical direction during the company’s foundation phase.

This is an opportunity where you will help shape the technical direction of the practice, working on real-world robotics challenges across multiple sectors, with the backing of the Reply Group and exposure to cutting-edge projects in outdoor, unstructured environments. The role combines remote work, client site engagement, and team collaboration, while offering ongoing professional development, and the opportunity to contribute to core product and consulting capability development. This is a hybrid-based role with regular field testing at outdoor sites.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain the core ROS 2 navigation and behaviour stack for outdoor robotics, integrating a range of components including those from hardware OEMs and other Reply group companies.
  • Integrate mapping and localisation systems on outdoor robotic platforms at various levels of abstraction.
  • Design and implement autonomous behaviour architectures including task planning, mission planning, path planning, and decision-making for outdoor robotic platforms.
  • Develop and maintain the interoperability layer using frameworks such as Open RMF, including fleet adapters, traffic management, and task dispatch to enable coordination of heterogeneous robot fleets.
  • Integrate robotic systems with client fleet management and operational oversight systems, ensuring that robot behaviours and fleet coordination connect cleanly with existing business workflows.
  • Build and maintain dynamic spatial representations of client operational environments using open mapping standards and digital twin approaches.
  • Build outdoor robotics Proofs of Concept that meet client technical requirements, progressing from representative environments through to full client-site deployments, supported by physical field trials and simulation-based validation.
  • Contribute to simulation environments for behaviour, navigation, and fleet coordination testing.
  • Contribute to reusable, modular software components that accelerate future project delivery.
  • Advise the consulting team on mapping, planning, behaviour, and fleet coordination options, translating client requirements into implementable technical approaches.
  • Contribute to systems engineering processes including requirements traceability and hazard analysis for robotic deployments in unstructured outdoor environments.

About the Candidate:

  • Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred)
  • Linked or transferable skills, along with consulting experience or a strong interest in consulting, are highly desirable.
  • Strong hands-on experience with ROS 2, including familiarity with Nav2 or similar navigation frameworks.
  • Experience with mapping and localisation for mobile robots, including landmark-based approaches and GNSS positioning.
  • Experience designing autonomous behaviours (e.g. path planning, task planning, mission planning, behaviour trees/state machines).
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python within a Linux environment, with experience in outdoor robotics and familiarity with Open RMF or similar fleet coordination frameworks.
  • Awareness of systems engineering principles (e.g. V-model), along with experience in Docker, CI/CD, DevOps practices, and simulation tools (Gazebo or Nvidia Isaac Sim).
  • Hands-on experience with multi-robot coordination, fleet management systems, task allocation algorithms, and familiarity with mapping standards, geospatial data, or digital twin generation would be beneficial.
  • Experience with 3D mapping, point cloud processing, semantic mapping techniques, and working with OEM robotic platforms and third-party autonomy stacks would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards, experience in relevant sectors, holding a UK driving licence, and fluency in German or Italian would be beneficial.
