Location: Ruislip
Description
You’ll join OCU’s design function at the forefront of the UK’s high-voltage infrastructure, shaping the real-time systems and communications networks that enable safe and reliable operation of substations across the DNO network. Working across projects from 11kV to 132kV, you’ll play a key role in delivering SCADA and RTS designs that support the evolving demands of the energy transition.
This is an opportunity to take a senior technical position within a growing organisation, where you’ll lead complex design solutions, influence standards and work on projects that are critical to the resilience and modernisation of the UK’s power network.
What You'll Do
- You’ll lead the design and development of real time systems and SCADA architectures for substation projects, ensuring solutions are robust, secure and aligned to DNO standards.
- Working across the full project lifecycle, you’ll define requirements at feasibility stage through to supporting commissioning and final handover.
- You’ll produce and review detailed design deliverables, including system architecture diagrams, communications topologies and integration models, ensuring clarity, accuracy and compliance throughout.
- You’ll work closely with electrical, protection and telecoms specialists to deliver fully integrated designs that align with both operational and technical requirements.
- A key aspect of your role will be ensuring all RTS designs meet industry standards and governance requirements, working with DNO design authorities to gain timely approvals and applying a consistent approach to technical assurance.
- You’ll also define and coordinate communications interfaces, ensuring reliable connectivity across fibre, IP-based networks and OTN systems.
- You’ll support the specification and integration of RTUs, control panels and associated systems, ensuring effective data mapping and SCADA functionality.
- Alongside this, you’ll contribute to construction, testing and commissioning phases, providing technical guidance and supporting successful system integration.
- As a senior member of the team, you’ll provide technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, reviewing third-party designs and contributing to the continuous improvement of design processes, standards and technical delivery across the function.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
