Senior Safety Engineer

Workplace Type: Hybrid (every Wednesday in the London office, the rest from home)
Location: London, UK
Salary: £55k-85k

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Safety Engineer to lead delivery of formal safety and assurance activities across multidisciplinary projects, primarily within the railway domain. You’ll be a key client interface, managing technical quality, mentoring junior engineers, and shaping safety strategies that support complex infrastructure programmes.

You will:

  • Lead the production and review of safety assurance deliverables in line with CSM-RA and EN 50126/8/9 standards.
  • Chair HAZID/HAZOP workshops and oversee hazard management using IBM DOORS or equivalent tools.
  • Independently write risk assessments
  • Provide technical assurance through internal review, sign-off, and guidance to teams.
  • Drive innovation in safety processes, tools, and delivery methods.
  • Support bids and proposals, shaping technical solutions and cost estimates.
  • Manage project scope, quality, and budgets in collaboration with the Managing Director.
  • Build long-term client relationships and contribute to the company’s reputation for excellence.
  • Represent the company at industry forums or working groups where appropriate.

Required Experience

  • Degree (BEng/MEng/MSc) in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • Proven track record delivering safety assurance within complex, safety-critical industries.
  • Strong knowledge of EN 50126/8/9, IEC 61508, and CSM-RA.
  • Experience performing and guiding safety analyses (FTA, FMEA/FMECA, GSN, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical workstreams and mentor others.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Working knowledge of DOORS and MS Excel for hazard tracking.
  • Will have in-depth knowledge of at least one rail discipline such as Signalling, Track, Power, Rolling Stock etc.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of RAM and systems engineering.
  • Experience within rail signalling, traction power, or station systems.
  • Familiarity with IRSE certification (Modules C/D).
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and promoting a positive safety culture.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) — achieved or near completion
