Senior Scientist (Analytical, Bioscience) – Oncology Targeted Delivery (OTD) Team

About the Role

AstraZeneca is seeking a highly skilled Analytical Scientist to work in our Oncology Targeted Delivery (OTD) team based at The Discovery Centre, Cambridge. This role forms the core of our analytical team, specialising in the rational design of assays involving biological matrices and analytical methods required to study linker payloads and Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs).

ADCs and related scaffold conjugates are among the fastest-growing drug classes in oncology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently design, execute, and validate LC-MS assays to monitor the stability of small molecules and ADCs
  • Conduct studies to elucidate mechanistic insights relevant to ADC project biological results
  • Build and maintain state-of-the-art MS & HPLC methods for ADC and payload analysis, while training colleagues in their use
  • Act as a subject matter expert in a multi-disciplinary project team, supporting project goals
  • Work independently and collaboratively with internal/external stakeholders to ensure efficient data translation
  • Interpret data with little to no guidance, applying insights to predictive modelling for drug discovery
  • Maintain an expertise in analytical techniques, integrating broader functional knowledge to support the team
  • Share external research papers with peers to keep the team informed
  • Perform routine HPLC-MS based QC analysis for small molecules, ADCs, and other biologic modalities
  • Ensure all work—including others’—complies with Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality, and compliance standards, such as Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Ph.D or M.Sc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a relevant Analytical Science discipline (or B.Sc with extensive experience)
  • Hands-on experience with LC-MS, HPLC, and assay development
  • Expertise in Orbitrap or QTOF mass spectrometers (or similar instruments)
  • Bioanalysis experience, particularly with LC-MS/MS for:
    • Small molecules
    • Protein quantification
    • Impurity profiling
  • Strong background in quantitative bioanalytical methods for proteins
  • Deep understanding of chemistry, protein biochemistry, and drug mechanisms
  • Strong organisational skills, capable of multi-tasking and time management

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with emerging analytical technologies (e.g., SEC-HPLC, HIC-HPLC, Chennai Array Detectors—CAD)
  • Automation expertise (e.g., liquid handling systems)
  • Programming languages (R, Python) and database management
  • Drug discovery/drug development workflow knowledge
  • Experience with ADCs, linker payload stability, and biological matrix sample processing
