About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a laboratory-based scientist to join the Oncology Targeted Discovery (OTD) Bioconjugation and Analytical team in Cambridge. You will play a pivotal role in Oncology drug discovery by delivering robust, high-quality data to support targeted drug projects.
As a Bioconjugation Scientist, you will collaborate across AstraZeneca to drive early-phase drug discovery while:
- Applying bioconjugation techniques to small molecules, antibodies, and related scaffolds.
- Designing, optimising, and scaling lab experiments independently.
- Ensuring high scientific rigour, data integrity, and compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), SHE standards, and all internal/external regulations.
This role requires a sticom background in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical Biology, with a passion for hands-on experimental work and analysis. A deep understanding of protein biochemistry and bioconjugation is essential, along with strong communication skills to interact with stakeholders and shape decision-making.
Responsibilities

Experiment Design & Execution:
- Independently develop optimise, and scale up bioconjugation experiments for drug discovery.
- Apply metabolic analysis to evaluate conjugation outcomes.

Data Generation & Communication:
- Interpret data with clear implications for drug discovery.
- Prepare, author, and review laboratory notebooks, protocols, and reports.
- Present technical findings to multidisciplinary audiences, ensuring clarity.

Skills & Experience
Essential Criteria

PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related fields. OR
-
MSc/BSc in a relevant discipline with extensive industrial experience in bioconjugation, protein chemistry, or similar areas.

Strong expertise in:
- Biochemical fundamentals, including synthetic chemistry, protein purification, stabilisation.
- Techniques for protein/bioconjugate characterisation (e.g., UV-Vis spectroscopy, HPLC/SEC-IEX-HIC, LC-MS).
- Purification workflows, including ÄKTA systems and tangential flow filtration (TFF).
- Successful execution of conjugation strategies and construct validation.

Independent working with precision:
- Ability to plan, prioritise, and execute experiments with high integrity.
- Firm understanding of approaches to conjugated therapeutics delivery.

Communication skills:
- Written & verbal clarity to convey technical data to all audience levels (specialists to decision-makers).

Desirable (Plus Points)
- Direct experience with antibiody-drug conjugates (ADCs) or targeted therapies.
- Knowledge of protein stability assessment, aggregation studies, and biophysical characterisation (e.g., differential scanning calorimetry, analytical ultracentrifugation).
- Hands-on ability with high-throughput approaches or automated experimental workflows.
