We’re the UK's largest ports operator with a network of 21 ports around Britain. We handle around one quarter of the UK's seaborne trade and contribute £7.5 billion to our economy every year.

It’s a story we’re proud of but it doesn’t end there. We’re transforming our business and embracing the future.

We offer a vast range of roles spanning the UK, all rooted in a culture that welcomes diversity, fosters talent, encourages internal movement and progression, and places safety as our number one priority.

The Role: Senior Security Supervisor – Solent Gateway

Purpose:
To provide safe, efficient, and service-focused delivery of 24/7/365 security operations at ABP Solent Gateway Limited (SGL).

The Senior Security Supervisor provides day-to-day leadership of the security team whilst maintaining an active operational role. You will work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure the SGL security operation remains compliant according to the various regulations and standards drive UKD’s safety and compliance performance.

Accountabilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day delivery of security operations at SGL, ensuring security services are delivered and adhered to as set out in the concession agreement and security plan, to include regularly reviewing performance and service delivery with the Ministry of Defence as required.
  • Manage a team of port security supervisors and officers, ensuring all operations are conducted in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Provide operational cover for security shifts at short notice, including nights, weekends and public holidays, where business needs require, to ensure the maintenance of minimum staffing levels and continuous security coverage across the site.
  • Ensure access to the port remains controlled on a 24/7/365 basis and all site visitors are suitably inducted.
  • Promptly investigate security incidents as they occur, ensuring they are appropriately conducted in an efficient, effective and ethical manner; and that liaison is maintained with the relevant police authority and external agency, as well as internal stakeholders.
  • Carry out random spot checks to ensure access control and patrol strategies are adhered to, supporting regulatory compliance requirements and internal audits.
  • Manage the operations of the port security office.
  • Carry out the duties of the Deputy Port Facility Security Officer (DPFSO).
  • Be a key contact and liaise with all relevant stakeholders i.e. Ministry of Defence, port authorities, emergency services and police (Ministry of Defence Police/ Hampshire Constabulary) as required.
  • Engaging with ABP Southampton employees, MOD and port users to foster a strong security culture that recognises local ownership of risk management at all levels and strives to deliver a safe, beyond zero-harm working environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
