This role carries 24-hour accountability for ward management, including:
- Leading and developing the nursing team
- Ensuring compassionate, high-quality, patient-centred care
- Applying fair, honest, and objective people management principles
Key Leadership Responsibilities
Under NMC standards, this role is responsible for:
- Professional & clinical leadership of nursing staff
- Delivering expert clinical advice
- Complying with legal, statutory and Health Board policies
- Embedding standards of evidence-based practice
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Leadership & Organisation
- Independently plan work schedules while fulfilling outstanding management duties
- Supervise clinical and professional performance of nursing staff according to skill levels and competencies
Staff Supervision & Development
- Allocate clinical duties effectively to maintain high standards
- Support staff in adhering to the NMC Code (2018) for optimal quality and patient safety

Staffing & Resource Management
- Ensure prompt, cost-effective rosters, maintaining appropriate skill mix and optimal staffing levels for demand
- Oversee procurement, maintenance and budgeting of ward assets and equipment
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Monitor and control care standards through evidence-based evaluations
- Maintain infection control procedures and participate in regular audits, implementing findings
Learning & Professional Growth
- Foster a reflective culture to enhance practice improvement
- Promote research engagement, encouraging support or initiation of relevant studies
Complex Problem-Solving
- Manage difficult clinical and managerial challenges, making data-driven decisions and supporting patient risk stratifications

Hywel Dda University Health Board delivers NHS healthcare services across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, with an additional provision across bordering counties.
Scope of Work
With over 13,000 staff, services include:
