Senior Embedded Software Developer
Location
Commutable to Herfordshire, Cheltenham, and Bristol – mostly on-site (4 days/week on customer site, 1 day remote as appropriate)
Clearance Requirements
Must be eligible and willing to undergo DV (Developed Vetting) clearance (British Citizen or UK residency last 10 years).
About the Role
Are you a proven embedded software engineer who enjoys tackling complex problems and real-world constraints? Seeking an opportunity to design and deliver operational tooling alongside end users in National Security & Defence?
We’re looking for a senior technical contributor who can:
- Take ownership of embedded deliveries
- Guide technical direction
- Mentor junior engineers
- Work across platforms like ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and ARM
Responsibilities
Key Duties
- Lead development of bespoke embedded solutions across multiple platforms.
- Design, implement, and maintain production-quality C, C++, and/or Python code interfacing with hardware.
- Architect communications protocols, peripheral integration, and performance/robustness optimised solutions.
- Lead debugging, testing, and optimisation in lab and field environments.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to shape requirements, propose approaches, and influence delivery plans.
- Support integration, configuration, and secure deployment in operational environments.
- Produce high-quality documentation and enforce Git workflows & code review standards.
- Mentor junior engineers through coaching and knowledge sharing.
Essential Requirements
What You’ll Bring
- Extensive hands-on embedded software development experience.
- Strong proficiency in C/C++ (Python is desirable for certain tasks).
- Deep experience with embedded systems (ESP32, ARM Cortex, Single-Board Computers).
- Expertise in low-level interfacing (UART, GPIO, USB, SPI/I2C).
- Confidence with Linux-based development environments and toolchains.
- Proficient debugging skills (JTAG/SWD, logic analysers, profiling, etc.).
- Clear communication and influenceability across multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable (Bonus)
- Experience delivering in secure/defence environments.
- Cryptography, secure transport, or secure system design knowledge.
- Wireless experience (Bluetooth, UWB, Wi-Fi).
- USB device drivers & advanced USB communications expertise.
- RTOS or bare-metal development experience.
- Embedded Rust experience or strong interest.
Education & Qualifications
- Degree in relevant STEM/engineering discipline preferred (equivalent experience acceptable).
- Professional membership (e.g., BCS, IET) is beneficial but not mandatory.

Salary Range
£61,500 – £78,800 (varies based on factors including experience, location phase, and market rates).
