Senior Software Developer
SENIOR DEVELOPER – CNS
Location: Southampton (Hybrid)
We are looking for an experienced and driven Senior Developer to join CNS in Southampton and play a key role in the design, development, and delivery of high‑quality software across our customs and logistics platforms. This role sits at the heart of CNS technology delivery, working closely with the Lead Developer and wider stakeholders to build secure, scalable, and maintainable applications.
You’ll collaborate with project managers, business analysts, QA, IT operations, and other technical teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions. As a Senior Developer, you’ll take ownership of complex development tasks, contribute to architectural discussions, and support the continuous improvement of engineering standards and practices.
This position is ideal for a strong Java developer who enjoys working across the full software development lifecycle, mentoring others, and contributing to the delivery of modern, resilient systems in a fast‑moving, enterprise environment. AI understanding or experience would be adventageous.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE
- Design, develop, test, and maintain high‑quality software solutions in line with business and technical requirements.
- Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code adhering to agreed coding standards and best practices.
- Collaborate closely with project managers, business analysts, QA teams, IT operations, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate and predictable delivery.
- Translate functional and non‑functional requirements into well‑structured, scalable technical solutions.
- Actively participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and design workshops, providing constructive feedback and sharing knowledge.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve software defects, performing root cause analysis and implementing sustainable fixes.
- Produce and maintain clear, accurate technical documentation, including design specifications and release documentation.
- Develop and execute unit, integration, and automated tests to ensure software quality and reliability.
- Support CI/CD pipelines, automation initiatives, and continuous improvement of development workflows.
- Contribute to agile delivery activities including sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives, and release planning.
- Mentor and support junior developers, promoting a collaborative and high‑performing team culture.
- Ensure development activities comply with security standards, regulatory requirements, and internal governance policies.
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies and software engineering practices, adopting relevant improvements where appropriate.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- Proven experience delivering software applications within a commercial or enterprise environment.
- Strong Java development expertise, including Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, and RESTful APIs.
- Experience working with relational databases such as Oracle or SQL Server, including complex queries and performance optimisation.
- Hands‑on experience with CI/CD tools, version control (Git), and container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, Selenium, or similar.
- Understanding of secure software development principles and best practices.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP and modern architectural styles.
- Experience working within agile delivery environments, including DevOps and XP practices.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to work effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Ability to mentor, coach, and support other developers, helping to raise overall team effectiveness.
- Strong time‑management skills and the ability to prioritise effectively under pressure.
- A commitment to delivering high‑quality, well‑documented, and maintainable software.
