Senior Software Developer

About the Role

Critical Note:

Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to undergo this process. This is a remote position.


Your Future Duties and Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, and enhance secure, high-performing backend applications that support digital transformation.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, business stakeholders, and client teams to deliver resilient cloud-based solutions improving public services.
  • Drive technical direction, share expertise with the team, and promote engineering excellence through modern development practices.
  • Work in an Agile delivery team, owning technical challenges from design to deployment and operational support.
  • Develop scalable Java-based services, optimise continuous improvement, and support production environments.
  • Mentor colleagues, reinforcing high-quality engineering standards and fostering collaborative ways of working.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop secure, scalable backend applications using Java and modern frameworks.
  • Architect and deliver cloud-native solutions aligned with business goals.
  • Lead and influence technical design discussions, contributing to architectural decisions.
  • Collaborate with Agile teams through sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  • Build and integrate large-scale applications across complex environments.
  • Automate and improve deployment pipelines with CI/CD best practices and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Monitor and resolve production incidents, ensuring system reliability and operational excellence.
  • Mentor peers and share knowledge, enhancing engineering devotion and DevOps practices.

Required Qualifications to Succeed

To excel in this role, you must be an experienced software developer with expertise in Java, secure and scalable applications, cloud environments, and strong Agile collaboration skills.

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong commercial experience developing with Java, Spring Boot, and Hibernate.
  • Experience integrating with Identity and Access Management (IDAM) platforms (e.g. ForgeRock, One Identity, Okta, Azure AD, Auth0).
  • Proven experience with Jenkins and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience reverse-engineering applications and supporting legacy integrations.
  • Proficiency with Git version control and collaborative practices.
  • Ability to work independently within Agile teams, contributing effectively.
  • Experience with Jira and Confluence for work and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services.
  • Knowledge of Terraform and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Experience with Ansible for automation.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and observability tooling.
  • Frontend development experience.
  • Experience in large-scale public sector or highly regulated environments.
