We are currently recruiting for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Development team within the Rail Infrastructure, Mobile Communications business based in Poole. This role will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, improvement, testing, and support of software targeting arm and Intel based devices. You will also from time to time provide technical support to other teams including Sales, Projects, Test, and Production.
The Mobile Communications business supplies on-board GSM-R equipment and other engineering solutions to rail industry operators and suppliers worldwide. This includes the GSM-R cab radio with GPS and LTE connectivity and the GSM-R data radio. We have earned a respected reputation in the industry which has developed as a result of our success in delivering to our customers. In addition, we are leading the way within the railway industry in developing the next generation of rail communications (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), based on 4G and 5G technology, so this is a great time to join the business in the development of a new, exciting technology.
You’ll make an impact by:
- Taking ownership of complete engineering work packages, ensuring delivery to agreed scope, budget, quality standards, and timescales, while providing technical oversight of subcontractors where required.
- Applying systems engineering expertise across the full project lifecycle, from requirements analysis and system design through to implementation, verification, validation, testing, and site commissioning support.
- Providing accurate and timely technical guidance to project teams and bid activities, helping to deliver innovative and robust engineering solutions.
- Supporting sales and bid teams by developing technical solutions for tenders and customer proposals, while building effective relationships with customers, suppliers, and key stakeholders.
- Driving complex product development activities through all stages of the development lifecycle, contributing to the creation and enhancement of cutting-edge technology solutions.
- Leading and supporting demonstrations, trials, and evaluations of new products, showcasing capabilities to both internal stakeholders and customers.
- Using your engineering experience and commercial awareness to develop cost estimates, support project planning activities, and ensure successful delivery against budget, schedule, quality, and performance targets.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex technical challenges and deliver high-quality engineering outcomes that create value for customers and the business.

You’ll make a difference by…
- Strong experience developing software for Linux-based embedded systems, including troubleshooting and integration with hardware devices.
- Experience designing and developing network communications solutions, with knowledge of GSM, GSM-R, 4G, and/or 5G technologies.
- Proficiency in C++ and Qt-based GUI development for embedded platforms, with exposure to Wayland and modern Linux graphics frameworks desirable.
- Knowledge of IBM Rational SDL and TTCN Suite, or experience with similar telecommunications software development and testing tools.
- Understanding of secure coding principles, software quality practices, and the development of reliable, robust applications.
- Experience working within Agile and DevOps environments, with knowledge of modern software development lifecycles; rail industry experience would be advantageous.
