Senior Software Engineer

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in evolving M&S’s Customer Order Domain. This team provides the critical software capabilities that capture, manage, and fulfil customer demand across every channel, powering digital experiences and business operations that serve millions of customers every year.

Your “customers” are product teams, engineers, and business stakeholders and your mission is to enable them through scalable services, robust APIs, event-driven architectures, and exceptional engineering practices.

This is a role for an engineer who is excited by building high-volume transactional systems, designing reusable platform capabilities, and shaping how customer orders are processed, fulfilled, and managed across one of the UK's largest retailers.

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Design, build, and evolve backend services that support the complete customer order lifecycle, from order creation through to fulfilment and completion.
  • Develop scalable microservices and APIs using Java/Kotlin, enabling reliable and efficient order processing across multiple channels.
  • Contribute to event-driven architectures using Kafka to support high-volume transactional workflows across Payments, Pricing, and Fulfilment domains.
  • Design and evolve GraphQL and REST APIs, ensuring consistency, performance, scalability, and an excellent developer experience.
  • Build resilient, low-latency solutions using distributed databases, caching technologies, and modern architectural patterns.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Architects, and business stakeholders to solve complex commerce challenges.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
