PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £60,200 - £73,365 plus London Weighting depending on relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Our Software Engineering teams build and operate innovative products and platforms that help keep the BBC at the forefront of the industry.

Core Data Platform is part of Data Platform, providing trusted, fast, and reliable access to audience and business data that enables a more data-informed and personalised BBC.
We support personalised experiences across BBC products, including iPlayer and Sounds, while providing a platform used by a multitude of active users across our data community, including analysts, scientists, and engineers. This role offers the opportunity to work with data at scale and build highly scalable data platforms and ingestion pipelines.
Your Key Responsibilities And Impact
- Help architect and lead the development of scalable, high-performance software, data lake, and data warehouse platforms, driving technical decisions that align with long-term product and business goals.
- Drive and evolve audience personalisation platforms and data access services, ensuring reliability, performance, and operational excellence for business-critical systems across the organisation.
- Partner with architects and product leaders to define and deliver the long-term technical vision, setting standards for cloud infrastructure using AWS CDK/CloudFormation and CI/CD pipelines via GitHub Actions and Code Pipeline.
- Drive engineering excellence through test-driven development, test automation, and observability best practices, leveraging CloudWatch and Grafana to maintain platform health at scale.
- Lead and inspire a high-performing engineering culture through mentorship, thought leadership, and cross-team collaboration, championing DevSecOps principles and security best practices across the full software development lifecycle.

Your Skills And Experience – Key Criteria
Essential Criteria
- Extensive experience building scalable, resilient, and high-performance systems and pipelines. Experience handling sensitive data and implementing robust security practices. Hands-on experience with large-scale data warehouses (e.g. Redshift) in cloud-native environments.
- Expertise with databases such as DynamoDB, Redis, Aurora, Athena, and Redshift, plus strong experience with AWS services (S3, EC2, SQS, Lambda, IAM, Managed Airflow), cloud networking, and cloud solution architecture.
- Advanced proficiency in Infrastructure-as-Code using AWS CDK and CloudFormation, combined with strong CI/CD practices — including GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and GitOps workflows.
- Deep understanding of cloud security, governance, and compliance, with a proven ability to define and implement scalable security frameworks.
- Proficiency in Python and/or Java, with the ability to apply them effectively across API development, data engineering, automation, and infrastructure tooling contexts.
