Senior Software Engineer

As a Senior Software Engineer at MyGraduationClip, you’ll design, build, and refine the technology that powers live graduation experiences for universities across the UK, Ireland, Australia, and beyond. Our platform handles high-volume media processing—personalised videos, images, and workflows—for major ceremonies yearly, requiring backend engineering, AWS infrastructure, media-processing pipelines, and AI-assisted tooling to ensure scalability, observability, and reliability. We’re looking for a hands-on Senior Software Engineer who wants ownership, variety, and meaningful impact in a fast-moving environment.

About MyGraduationClip

MyGraduationClip enables universities to manage hundreds of thousands of personalised graduation clips annually, millions of graduate/family interactions, and time-sensitive ceremonies. Your work will intersect with:

  • Live events and event-driven workflows
  • Media processing (video, image, audio)
  • Cloud infrastructure, (particularly AWS)
  • AI-assisted engineering and automation
  • Operational tooling and observability

This isn’t abstract work—your contributions directly impact real graduates, universities, and event production teams.

The Role

We’re seeking a strong, hands-on Senior Software Engineer who thrives on ownership, systemic improvements, and technical leadership. This isn’t just hands-on development—you’ll collaborate across backend, infrastructure, product, and operations to:

  • Own systems for processing personalised media during live ceremonies.
  • Hardening operational bottlenecks in the platform.
  • Shape technical direction of a rapidly expanding market in personalised graduation media.
  • Debug and optimise media-processing pipelines, customer workflows, and critical event support tools.
  • Prototype AI-assisted workflows, analytics, and new alumni engagement features.

You won’t just fix tickets; you’ll ** diagnose issues**, improve core architecture, develop new features, and make the system more maintainable as it scales. You’ll need to balance speed with reliability, adapt to shifting priorities, and extend the platform’s capabilities while reducing operational friction for users.

What You Might Work On

  • Scaling AWS infrastructure, refining cloud deployments (using CDK), and improving →real-time monitoring and alerting for ceremonies.
  • Debugging and optimising media pipelines that handle thousands of personalized clips during graduations.
  • Building internal operational tools that reduce manual work and improve efficiency.
  • Optimising asynchronous workflows (e.g., SQS, Step Functions, Lambda execution paths).
  • Enhancing observability such as auto-detected clip issues, embargo tracking, and video autotagging.
  • Refining distributed components for automated media processing, caching, and automated retries.
  • Developing analytics and insights for universities(client optimization tracking, partner demo play rates).
  • Prototyping AI augmentations (semantic search, Q&A over graduation footage archeologies, QA-assisted replay simulations).
  • Automating QA processes over graduation datasets and scaling image tagging for UI and reporting agency use.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Why This Work Is Interesting

Our engineering team is small but impactful. Each contribution has a direct outcome:

  • Good ideas implement quickly—because decisions are made soon, and granular teams spread ownership effectively.
  • Infrastructure changes, bug fixes, or team UIs are felt immediately by relevant stakeholders.
  • Every improvement impacts hundreds of universities and their ceremonies, cementing a tool you’ll directly influence for years.
  • Members are full-circle engineers—tackling everything from legacy automation, tracking leaks in FTP transfers, to designing AI scanners for safe media retrieval.

The right engineer will influence how this platform evolves, while controlling complexity effectively.

What We Are Looking For

Core Attributes

  • Identifies problems from start to delivery. Not just "who what when," but figuring out exactly why something needs changing.
  • Ships pragmatic solutions without bureaucratic complexity. Knows when to wait for a perfect feature, and when to make something usable first.
  • Reason clearly about trade-offs. Speed vs quality, experimentation budget vs reliability, operational adaptation.
  • Can traverse disciplines. Engineering solutions work equally well for product teams, operations engineers, or database analysts.
  • Thrives under constraints. Shoulder tight deadlines with sufficient terrible choices. Decisions under high ambiguity.
  • Raises engineering standards. Drags Lecompte on the team without abandoning due speed or consolidation.

Mindset

} Likes building real-world systems with visible impacts. } Prefers active project ownership over proxy tasks. } Solves messy, practical engineering challenges. | Comfortable designing systems in production, rather than “shadow” environments. } Finds therapy in process simplification. } Wants to define the technical shape of organics growth, not slots in a big-machine org.

Skills & Tech Stack

We focus on backend systems but realize some full-stack responsibilities—especially to speed up prototyping. Key technologies include:

Core

  • Tech: Python, AWS (including CDK), Vue.js, PostgreSQL/MySQL, Lambda, SQS, StepFunctions, S3.
  • Tool: FFmpeg as media processor, cloud scraping, or proactive video autosync.

Advanced Areas (Bonus Ex)

  • Media processing of various formats (FFmpeg stream handling).
  • VectorDB systems, language model integration or AI-assisted QA for video data.
  • Observability stack (Prometheus, ELK, backend monitoring).
  • Operational automation (boto3, Python CLI pulsers, Canary controll).

Collaboration & Culture

This is a UK-based, mostly remote role with occasional travel (Oxfordshire, London, live ceremonies). Product strategy lives at the intersection of technology, operational immediacy requirements, and university specific needs.

AI is a hand-maiden, not a driver. Daily use of Codex, Cursor, Claude.ai, Copilot, or ChatGPT is encouraged. However, your team applies AI strategically to enhance development without becoming a crutch.

Role-Specific Fitters

⚡ Good for you if:

  • You enjoy salty but immediate chain reactions inside production minions.
  • Autonomy feels delicious; you reach fast.
  • Listen to systems, prognosis messy problems, not just negations on bugs.
  • Landure in guiding other engineers and situations.
  • You prefer producerly clarity (static structure for extension) over bureaucratic expansion.

❌ Be cautious this is right if:

  • You want an API-first, cliches documented, cost-to-benefit process field.
  • Prefer narrowly scoped responsibilities (specific sub-team organs).
  • Look for tight bureaucracy over choice.
  • Look down on rotothing error states and scatter-shared culture.
  • Algorithmic perfectionism outranks user/one-impact stability.

Compensation & Specs

  • Salary: £60,000–£70,000–ranging on experience and likely tier—frank for European UK cost norms.
  • Location: Mostly full-time European-remote (planned London, kit assessment in firm town) + credible client events or graduation facility appearance—an agreeable schedule of or either “per year commitments when incited.”
  • Team: Founder + CTO + 1 operational-oriented engineer, to be extended under success/users growth .
  • Employment: Full-time.

Let's chat if curious—this is less about callbacks, more about a quick sync on ideas and cultural aerodynamics.
