Senior Embedded Systems Software Engineer – Fusion & HTS Control
Tokamak Energy is a global leader in fusion energy and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies, leading innovation across government projects, industry, and strategic partnerships. Our robust end-to-end HTS capability, spanning design to manufacturing, positions us at the forefront of next-generation energy solutions.
We partner with the UK Government’s STEP Fusion Programme (under a £70m contract) to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, alongside work on tokamak systems and plasma integration.

About the Role
This critical technical position involves developing real-time software interfacing directly with hardware to control and monitor cutting-edge engineering systems.

You will architect C++ applications for embedded and Linux-based platforms, handling:
- Data acquisition
- System control
- Hardware integration
The role offers ownership and impact within a growing software team, ensuring strong influence over foundational systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing C++ software for real-time data acquisition & system control
- Interfaceing with hardware via USB, TCP/IP, SPI, I2C, and serial protocols
- Building system monitoring & control tools
- Creating backend tooling for data storage, processing, and retrieval
- Leading development of core control software
- Collaborating with electronics engineers, hardware teams, and R&D specialists
Requirements
Essential
✅ Strong C++ development experience ✅ Expertise in asynchronous/real-time systems ✅ Familiarity with Linux environments ✅ Proven hardware interfacing (I/O protocols) ✅ Proficient in version control (Git) and build systems (CMake)
Desirable
✅ Experience with Embedded Linux / ARM-based systems ✅ Asynchronous I/O frameworks (e.g., Boost.Asio) ✅ Knowledge of real-time systems/networking principles ✅ Messaging protocols (e.g., MQTT) ✅ Hands-on experience with FPGAs or microcontrollers
