- Department: BBC Media Tech – Mobile Experiences
- Location: Glasgow (Pacific Quay or hybrid Salford Dock House/London Broadcasting House – 1 day per week hybrid)
- Salary Range: £63,000 – £68,000 (depending on skills, knowledge, and experience)
- Purpose: Part of BBC Extend programme for disabled applicants (as defined by the Equality Act 2010/Disability Discrimination Act 1995).
ABOUT THE ROLE
This Senior Software Engineer role is central to the BBC’s Mobile Experiences team, focusing on Mobile Enablement—building systems and infrastructure to accelerate mobile app development, mentor teams, and align technical standards across the organisation.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll:
- Develop and maintain scalable systems/infrastructure to support BBC mobile (iOS/Android) app development.
- Bridge gaps across teams by mentoring senior developers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Advocate for technical standards, ensuring agile workflows and continuous improvement via code reviews and post-incident reviews.
Impact: Central role in enabling, scaling, and unifying BBC mobile development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
To achieve this, you will:

System Development & Maintenance:
- Oversee the lifecycle of support systems—from requirements through to deployment and maintenance.
- Work closely with mobile app development teams and cross-BBC stakeholders.

Agile Culture & Collaboration:
- Uphold high standards through code reviews, testing, and meaningful feedback.
- Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with technical and non-technical teams to solve challenges and gather requirements.

- Mentor junior engineers, refine team processes, and foster high performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES AT A GLANCE
<ul> <li>Hardware/software <strong>SRE/service ownership</strong> for tools critical to 100+ BBC mobile engineers</li> <li>Leverage <strong>cloud technologies</strong> (AWS, GCP, CI/CD) to build reproducible environments</li> <li>Design and document <strong>infrastructure-as-code solutions</strong> (e.g. Docker, Terraform, lab automation)</li> <li>Guide teams in adopting best practices for <strong>version control, secrets management, and security testing</strong></li> <li>Escalate/respond to SLO-breaches; perform <strong>root cause analysis</strong> in virtual on-call rotations</li> <li>Support app development <strong>ad-hoc and ad-lib requests</strong> (e.g. devices/sdk setup, custom tooling)</li> <li>Define and deliver improvements that <strong>reduce complexity and painpoints</strong> for mobile teams</li> </ul>** about the BBC opportunity**

REQUIREMENTS
Essential Criteria
Core technical expertise in: ✔ AWS expertise (CodeBuild, CodePipeline, EC2, Lambda, Firecracker).
- Deep understanding of deploying, monitoring, troubleshooting, and scaling systems in production,
- Experience automated testing via Python/GitHub Actions.

- Hands-on native mobile (iOS/Android) development frameworks

- MacOS environments and tools for CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Xcode)
- Domain knowledge of large-scale AWS development (e.g. Serverless frameworks, Python web frameworks).
