Role Title: Senior Systems Engineer (Java / C / C++ / Linux)

Contract Type: Initial Contract (Outside IR35)

Location: Fully Remote (UK-based)

Day Rate: Competitive Market Rate

Contract Length: 6/12 months

About the Opportunity

A senior, multi-faceted Systems Engineer is required to join a critical project stream focused on maintaining, updating, and stabilizing an established enterprise platform. Operating across multi-language components (desktop, server, web, and embedded), you will be tasked with executing precise, high-impact deliverables against scheduled release roadmaps.

This engagement is ideal for a contractor who excels at diving deep into mature, multi-language codebases, diagnosing intricate system bugs, and applying safe, methodical code changes within a Linux-heavy production environment.

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables

  • Execute defined maintenance packages and compatibility upgrades across Java and C/C++ services.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and resolve complex defects within a large-scale, multi-language system.
  • Maintain and enhance build automation, release packaging, and deployment scripts.
  • Implement targeted updates to Linux native applications, network protocols, and persistence layers.
  • Work alongside wider technical teams to ensure reliable, high-performing software updates that hit key release targets.

Core Technical Requirements

  • Polyglot Engineering: Strong hands-on background in both Java (including Java 8 environments) and C/C++.
  • Operating Systems: Deep Linux-based development, environment configuration, and native debugging expertise.
  • Legacy Systems: Proven track record of safely refactoring, maintaining, and improving mature enterprise codebases.
  • Build Tools & Versioning: Native build automation tools (GNU Make, Autotools, Ant) and classic VCS (SVN/Git).
  • Database & Web: PostgreSQL experience along with web tier familiarity (Apache, PHP, JavaScript, or Python).
  • Architectures: Solid background in distributed, networked application architectures.

Bonus / Advantageous Skills

  • Experience working with high-performance messaging platforms or serialisation tools (e.g., AMQP, ZeroMQ, Protocol Buffers).
  • Interoperability expertise using JNI (Java Native Interface) to bridge Java and native code.
