Join ICOMAT – Revolutionising the Future of Lightweight Manufacturing!
iCOMAT is an advanced manufacturing company that invented Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) - the only proven technology for producing defect-free curved-fiber composite parts at industrial scale. We deliver the lightest structures possible for aerospace, automotive, defense, and space, at a rate and cost efficiency that far exceeds existing composite production processes.
We build and operate automated factories for composite materials, delivering components to Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs. The business has three main divisions: development of automated production machines, development of software design and production tools, and operation of the factory. We work with 25+ customers and completed the largest ever Series A in composites manufacturing to fuel a significant scale-up, with growth plans that will see the business multiply in size over the next two to three years and expand operations into the UK, Europe and the US.
The business has currently more than 130,000 sqm of production capacity with manufacturing facilities in the UK (Gloucester and Swindon) and the US (Dayton, Ohio); a Hardware R&D Centre in Bristol, UK; and a Software R&D Centre in Athens, Greece.
We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our existing Software Engineering team and support the development of our in-house Engineering Software tools, including Python/C++ wrappers and automation interfaces for industrial CAD, CAE and CAM platforms.
What will you be doing?
From day one, you will be developing novel approaches to complex design and manufacturing problems that sit right at the cutting edge of industrial-scale composite manufacturing.
As a member of iCOMAT’s in-house software engineering team, you will be contributing to the development of software supporting structures and manufacturing engineers with the design, optimization and manufacturing of high-performance composite components.
The core focus of this role will be supporting the development of iCOMAT’s in-house Computer Aided Manufacturing software. You will also build and maintain the integration layer between iCOMAT’s software tools and industrial CAD/CAE/CAM systems, automating parts of the composite design workflow and improving feedback between manufacturing and design disciplines.
As well as writing software code, you will be expected to contribute across much of the software development lifecycle, from co-designing requirements with end users, to validating MVPs, and executing the build, test and release of production-standard software.
How do you fit in?
You will be joining iCOMAT’s in-house software engineering team, working alongside the Principal Software Engineer and other Senior Software Engineers. This is a small, senior team developing the software foundations for iCOMAT’s design and manufacturing capability.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The current team brings experience across engineering software, machine learning and production-grade software delivery. We work closely with iCOMAT’s structures, robotics and manufacturing engineers to understand the problems that matter most, then turn those problems into reliable internal tools.
This role would suit someone who enjoys contributing to a team where the boundaries between product thinking, engineering judgement, and software delivery are deliberately close.
For this role, your contribution will be to deepen the team’s capability around CAD integration, automation, and the interface between design tools and manufacturing software. You will bring practical software engineering discipline, curiosity about engineering workflows, and the confidence to collaborate with domain experts to build tools that are robust, maintainable, and genuinely useful.
Who are you?
- Innovative. You are comfortable developing novel solutions for truly complex problems.
- Independent. You don’t shy away from open-ended problems and enjoy helping shape end-to-end solutions. You are comfortable working as an individual contributor as part of a multi-functional team.
- Product-minded. Software is more than just code. You embrace the opportunity to contribute across the end-to-end software development lifecycle and care about delivering a solution that creates real, measurable value for the business.
- Engineering-led. You enjoy working close to the physics, geometry, and manufacturing constraints behind the software, and you are motivated by building tools that help engineers make better decisions faster.
What should you expect?
iCOMAT is on a mission to revolutionise the way engineers design and manufacture with composite materials. We have a build-first methodology and take pride in developing in-house capabilities that cater for our specific needs. Our technology is world-leading, and our software must be capable of supporting demanding engineering workflows from early concept through to production.
You should expect to work on problems where software, geometry, manufacturing, and product thinking meet. This role will suit someone who enjoys writing high-quality code but also wants to understand how that code changes the way real parts are designed and manufactured.
iCOMAT is fast paced. The atmosphere is demanding but rewarding. We are operating at the cutting edge of composite manufacturing technology, and we are looking for people who want to help build the software foundations that allow that technology to scale.
