Role Description
We are seeking a seasoned Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Market Voice and Video (MVV) development team. The MVV team owns the core audio and video communication infrastructure within the Symphony app, heavily utilizing WebRTC.
As a senior member of this small, agile team, you won’t just maintain server-side media backend services, you will also drive architectural decisions, mentor team members, and take full ownership of robust, scalable backend systems. We are incredibly passionate about engineering excellence and CI/CD best practices. If you are someone who proactively shares ideas, challenges the status quo, and takes extreme accountability for deliverables, you'll fit right in.
Responsibilities
- Architect & Implement: Lead the design, implementation, and testing of highly scalable server-side microservices utilizing Java (Spring Boot) and TypeScript, ensuring optimal interaction with the broader Symphony ecosystem.
- CI/CD Leadership: Drive and evolve our Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) strategies, keeping Jenkins at the center of our automation pipeline.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product management to define technical requirements and collaborate across engineering teams to execute seamless product integrations.
- System Reliability: Investigate complex production issues or performance bottlenecks. Document thorough failure analyses, post-mortems, and root cause analyses (RCA) to continuously improve platform resilience.
- Mentorship & Quality: Lead constructive, collaborative backend design sessions and code reviews. Elevate the team's engineering standards by mentoring junior and mid-level developers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
